Upgrade 4.0-5.0-5.1 on one (live) server?

Paul,
Not sure what you're asking...

Troy,

Thanks for the vote of confidence!
I just ran a successful conversion from 4 to 5.0 on my personal workstation
(W2K Pro). Still beat the ancient server by days....
As it is I am still doing the 5.0 to 5.1 on the live server. One question;
you do differentiate between a backup and a copy, right?
I'll be sure to double check each patch before I throw it on..... ;)

Paul,
That's how we did it. The main thing to remember is: 1. Make a backup
of the Live Database, label it so it is clear, and stick it on two different
computers for safe keeping. 2. Move a copy of the live database to another
directory on the server and do the Schema Changes on it there. If you do
this, your live database will remain untouched. We did all our testing
without even shutting the Live Database off (once Progress was installed on
the new versions, that is). We made a backup of the Live Database while it
was running, and then "Restored" it to a new directory. Then did the schema
changes.

Looking at your situation, this will save you HOURS of waiting for Schema
Changes and Data Conversions.

One Horror Story. I applied a 4.0 Patch to the Directory where the 3.0
Database was. It REALLY messed things up and required a totally clean
install of Vantage 3.0 to get our live database back up. I've heard of
folks who "unshare" their old Database when doing a new install of a new
version so that they don't accidentally install in the wrong place. For
some reason, the patches always look for the older version of Progress
first.

Go for it.

Subject: [Vantage] Upgrade 4.0-5.0-5.1 on one (live) server?

All,

Just wondering about this one:

My test server keeps failing miserably (BSOD) on the data conversion from
4
to 5.0. One of the main reasons might be that it is RAM starved (256) and
the processor is pretty slow as well (P100). Our database is fairly
large:
535MB.

I am toying with the idea of using the live Vantage server tonight as a
test
ground for an upgrade. After 6pm EST I can stop the live DB and reboot
the
servers as many times as I want to, since I will be the only one here.

My main worry is damaging the current (live) install to the point where I
won't be able to operate tomorrow morning.

Things that make the idea attractive:
-I can stick both EPIC50 and EPIC51 on their own partitions
-The live server has dual PIII's and 1Gig RAM
-In a test environment I like to mirror the current operating environment
as
closely as possible (I guess it can't get any closer than this)

Has anyone ever attempted a (test) upgrade on a server which also holds
the
live version of Vantage? What are the pitfalls/horror stories?

TIA,

Paul Siebers
