5.2 Test on Stand Alone Server

Les,
We do this fairly regularly as well. It's pretty straight-forward, and is great practice for the real conversion.

Ok thanks. I was looking for some possible problems or show stoppers. Looks
like there are none. Good to hear, I will continue on... Les

I've set up my 5.2 test environment on a separate server (Win2000).
I'd like to convert a copy of my 5.1 DB (NT 4.0), to use in my 5.2
environment. Our users tend not to comprehend changes, unless they
see it applied to familiar data. Has anybody done this succesfully
without any problems? Safest steps?

Thanks,

Les
I did this (all the way from 4.0 to 5.20) and had users try Vantage on test
server with semi-live data. I just copied the backup.1 file over and
restored it then converted. One huge caution will be on any end user using
both versions after you go live you'll need to check the HOSTS file on the
client and remove references to the former test server (or the current live
server if you are switching servers). Also I ran into a problem upgrading
the dual clients where I could not uninstall the older version and ended up
doing brute force registry hack. So you might want to limit the number of
dual users or research better ways to uninstall 5.1 before installing 5.2
client.

I do it weekly.

The conversion is rather quick.
I back up the original using backvan.bat online and then copy it to the test
server. Restore it to the new location and then run the Schema Change.
Log-in as manager and run the database conversion and then check the
permissions on the part maintenance/check in/check out/approve revs ect. (I
think they addressed that with a patch, but it's worth checking).

On my laptop 700 MHz it converts in single user mode in about 30 minutes or
less. (I have the copy and restore called from a batch file I called
"upgrade.bat"). I can't get it to call the schema change yet, but I am
still working on that one.

My conversion is from 5.0 to 5.1 to 5.2, but I left off the first steps for
you.
You should find this process works just fine.
Any questions, feel free to ask.

Les: One thing that I do on the test server side is change the company name
and the color to give a hint to users that something might be different. Of
course, I don't convert once a week, so once I change it, it is changed.
