Big debate raging here about tracking bookings. Heart of the issue is that ever since DCD-Classic where an order and a job were the same thing we have booked "jobs". Mainly because jobs are something "right now" whereas orders can be blanket type orders that go out for a year. The sales department is rated on bookings levels within a 90-day window. So we have a convoluted mess of reports that link jobs to order releases that are in the window and as we add new jobs to supply an order we "book" the new job.

I have advocated for several years a switch to booking orders and if there are future releases outside the window to make them unfirm. Then when they make them firm they can note it as an adjustment to the order that can be used to "book" this firmness as of that date. Much better because of the adjustment logging which, on jobs, we have to use memos for. Worse yet on jobs the adjustments often straddle months making tracking bookings in a month difficult. With orders any adjustment would be a + or - to the total for the month in which it occurs.

Last piece of the argument though is reporting. I can see nothing like a daily order booking report (or monthly either) so I assume people have written their own. Any advice or gotchas in developing such reports? At this point all I need to be able to do is tell our president this is possible to do.

BTW....does anyone else book jobs rather than orders?

Bookings is a huge number for us. Order bookings that is. We consider
anything over 3 months out as not firm as it is really just a forecast
that is subject to change (usually).

I have a bookings report (Report Builder) that tracks the ins/outs on a
daily basis. Let me know if you would like a copy.

Big debate raging here about tracking bookings. Heart of the issue is
that ever since DCD-Classic where an order and a job were the same thing
we have booked "jobs". Mainly because jobs are something "right now"
whereas orders can be blanket type orders that go out for a year. The
sales department is rated on bookings levels within a 90-day window. So
we have a convoluted mess of reports that link jobs to order releases
that are in the window and as we add new jobs to supply an order we
"book" the new job.

I have advocated for several years a switch to booking orders and if
there are future releases outside the window to make them unfirm. Then
when they make them firm they can note it as an adjustment to the order
that can be used to "book" this firmness as of that date. Much better
because of the adjustment logging which, on jobs, we have to use memos
for. Worse yet on jobs the adjustments often straddle months making
tracking bookings in a month difficult. With orders any adjustment would
be a + or - to the total for the month in which it occurs.

Last piece of the argument though is reporting. I can see nothing like a
daily order booking report (or monthly either) so I assume people have
written their own. Any advice or gotchas in developing such reports? At
this point all I need to be able to do is tell our president this is
possible to do.

BTW....does anyone else book jobs rather than orders?
