Auto login MES users

Bill,

Here's an easy way to do it in a mixed environment (where there are
regular Vantage users and MES users on the same server).

Copy the default.mfgsys file to MES.default.mfgsys

make the necessary auto-login edits (described in Scott's email below)
and save to the new file.

On each MES users Windows Environment tab (located in Active Direcotry
Users and Computers) have them run the following command:

<drive:>\client803\mfgsys -MES /config=MES.default.mfgsys

This will tell MES users to launch the MES using your new config file.
They will then still need to login with their employee ID, but this
should eliminate the need for them to put in a username and password
everytime they launch Vantage.

Hope this helps.

In terminal services all users are using the same default.mfgsys file.

All of our MES users use that same Windows and Vantage logon. Does
anyone know of a way to automate the login of an MES user so they
don't need to remmeber a password?

Note: All of our users access Vantage 8 through terminal services so I
cannot see how I can use the "SingleSignOn value="true" of the config
file. It would apply to all users.

Thanks,

Bill
If auto login will be truly of value to your company (based on some cost/benefit analysis), it seems you can either cough up the dough for a sufficient (presumably small - like 1-3) PCs or set up a 2nd terminal server for MES users.

Either should allow you to set up the config files for singlesignon=true for these specific user cases.

Question though: How will single sign on for MES users really help?

My understanding is that MES takes a single user login (that if I recall correctly, is an MES provided default user) and then, within MES, different employees (set up in Vantage) still have to 'clock in' to report activity.

Are all of your MES users going to do activity reporting under a single (or small few - like 2-4) role oriented vantage 'employee' entities?

If not, I don't understand the potential benefit.

Am I missing something? My understanding of it might be flawed so I'd also appreciate any related real world experiences from anyone in the group that might clarify the nuances of this aspect of MES better (for both Bill, myself, and perhaps others).

Thanks

You can have different config files for the same database. Make a
copy of the default and name it something else like MES. Then make
your changes & set the path for the MES users.

Bill,
My impression of what you are looking for is this...
You have users set up in the system to apply security to MES users (link the
Shop Employee to link to a user account).
Then you are looking to allow these Shop Employees to log into MES using
their "Shop Employee", "ID" and have it apply the security based on their
User account and not require a password after they enter their "ID".
If that is what you are looking for, I am also looking for the same thing.
It exists in 6.1 as a checkbox on the User account "DC Password Req". If
you left the box unchecked, they user was not required to enter a password
(except to set an initial password) when they log into Shop floor (6.1
Version of MES).
If I am correct in what you are looking for, one of us should create an
enhancement request and the other attach themselves to it.
Now as to calling it an enhancement request to request a feature be added
back that existed in the past, that I won't get into. :)

In addition, you can setup a RDC connection-specific shortcut that MES users launch (THEY RUN MES THROUGH INTO TS) where it's configured it to automatically launch MES and therefore they do not need to do anything other than run the connection shortcut for Terminal Server access.

Yes, I don't want the password requirement for MES user.

Michael, now why didn't I think of that - staring me right in the face!

Providing the correct username and password to MES users you would
think would be a non-issue but in a manufacturing environment with 100
MES users, some with no-computer experience, some with language
barriers, an auto logon is the way to go.

Thanks to all for your input...

In terminal services all users are using the same default.mfgsys file.
