Thanks for all of the reply's. I think we will just pick up a Symbol LS2208 for now. Should work for what we need and not to expensive. When I said portable I should have said handheld. Next time I will be more clear, I guess I was thinking more about lunch than what I was typing.

We have never had to mess with barcode scanners and I figured I could
easily find the perfect scanner but I was disappointed to find that
there is no scanner called "The Perfect Scannter". Instead, I found
5000 scanners that all look the same. I just want a scanner for the
shop (very dirty and harsh) and one for the office (perhaps a pen
scanner?). Does anyone have a suggestion to lean towards or run from?

We're using WASP CCD scanners both in the office and in the factory and so
far have had no problems in either environment.
They're a standard wedge scanner, very little set-up required and pretty
rugged

We tested the Hand Held IMAGETEAM 3800LR and found this to be a very
nice scanner.

The vendor that lent us the test scanner told us that pen scanners are
not worth the money saved because they are more difficult to use. Angle,
speed, and straightness of the scan with a pen scanner needs to be
consistent throughout the scan.

For our shop we have used the Welch-Allyn Imageteam 3800 gun type scanner. Very versitile and next to indestructable. After 6 years I have yet to see one fail and they get banged around and dropped on the concrete floor pretty often. Plug & play too - sits in-line on the keyboard line and translates scanes into key strokes.

Back on the AS/400 system with DCD-Classic (predecessor to Vantage) we had pen style in the shop and they were always getting dirty and failing. Huge hassle. I would definitely not recommend pens style for plant. Office, maybe OK but any "contact" type scanner will pick up dirt (or loose toner) from documents - especially if they have been in the plant (inventory tags, etc..).

Hi John,

I had this same issue. After calling 12 (literally) different people,
I found that Epicor has a group that SELLS them. The made a decent
recommendation to me for relatively reasonably priced barcode
scanners. It's a model LS2208. Portable, connected to the computer
via USB. We've been usein about 20 of them for a few months now. No
complaints.

Portable as in 'handheld'. Though I do think that wireless was an
option, I just saw it as a way for them to wander off and get lost.

I agree....Epicor's hardware Sales team, led by Steven Duralde, will
come very close to meeting the pricing by most other vendors, plus
you'll have Epicor's team to help support the stuff. They have
offered us a variety of options, including LCD touch-screen input
devices, Symbol handheld scanners (two varieties) and the tethered
wedge-type scanner mentioned before by others.

The folks at System3x.com have very attractive pricing as well, &
we're looking there to make sure we get the best overall costs.
