Constrained Materials & Job Scheduling - Vantage 8.03.305K

My apologies. When we started on Vantage in 8.0, what I said was
true. It did not take long for us to decide we would not use the
Constrained Material checkbox because everything bought to a job was
considered constrained regardless of the checkbox. We are on 404 now
and you are right that it is grayed out. I checked with Support and
somewhere around 8.03 it became necessary to have APS for that
feature. Sorry I didn't check first.

Hi,

We want to use the constrained material flag and lead time value within
the MPF to control the initial scheduling dates of jobs. Our business
is very material orientated and there is no point scheduling jobs if
materials are unavailable. We plan to use this for "A" class and
problem parts only. After setting the appropriate parameters and
running MRP, the new unfirm job suggestions appear to
take the specified raw material lead times into account, however when
we look at the detail tab within the job scheduling board, the material
constraints grid is blank. Does anyone know why this is ??

It doesn't work in 404B either (and, good riddance) - It's one of those nice sales pitch features that, in practical use, would be much more trouble than any productive value it would add.

Perhaps if Constrained was controlled at the PartPant (or better yet, PartWhse) level - rather than at the Part level (impacting all Plants), it would have some chance of being useful.

Probably some out there have also found that it wreaks havoc with MRP and the Global Scheduler (which are Plant-centric).

The view used in the application is a temp view that draws from several 'real' tables. I suspect the assembly method to construct the view on the fly is just flawed and never actually brings in the Part.Constrained status of the JobMtl.PartNum's - OR the display filter code for the native grid control is flawed in some fundamental way.

Thanks Rob, I guess I will give it up as a bad job then!!

I presume if we just set the lead times within the MRP planning
parameters this will get us to where we need to be. It would have
been useful to us to highlight those materials which are the key
drivers of the lead time.

I agree with your comments about the sales pitch! ;o)

I take it you are running 8.03.4xx - I have heard that this buggy,
particularly in relation to MRP. Are you encountering problems ?

Thanks,

Nick

I'll let you know after 6/9 if we overcame all the (new) 404 scheduling and MRP issues. We're piloting (and customizing/putting BAMs & BPMs in place like mad to get around the problems) so I'm hopeful it will be smooth.

- But yes: 403/4 were steps backwards in some VERY critical areas (to support our particular business model & subprocesses).

We have APS and on 404 it is a useless function relative to simply having skilled, experienced planners who don't need the system to do what they do in the blink of an eye in their heads.

It is a fundamentally flawed 'book' concept as there is (rarely) a true fixed "lead time" for a part in the real world. That's why we pay buyers and planners - to improve those lead times. Why any one would want a system to codify them is beyond me.

The concept of having stronger buyers / planners and not building in
failure is definitely the right way to go. A significant part of our
ERP implementation process ( having moved away from home grown
software ) is the culture change that goes with the move to a new
system and a new way of doing things. This never really hits you
until along way into the implementation process, as you realise that
changing the system and not cultivating the people wont achieve
anything and will yield the same poor results as before but just on a
different platform.

I think we will use some lead time parameters for the really nasty
parts and leave everything else for the time being. At least that
will help with the initial scheduling process.

Thanks,
