Crystal Web Server Logon Problem

Hi, Ted
Sorry I've not replied sooner, but here's the situation: I got the web
server running fine as a service, but got the "Looping logon" when I tried
accessing Vantage. I rummaged around Seagate, Progress, and Epicor, without
result. Seagate said go to Progress, which I did, and received a document
pretty much repeating the Merant ODBC driver setup. I went back to
Progress, who then said I needed to go to Seagate. I did, they tried a
couple different things (making sure I had all environment variables set to
system and not user, and the same for the DSN). Still no luck as a service.
I have the Web Server running as a process from a batch file now just fine.
I tried Seagate one last time, and they bowed out saying they couldn't help,
and that I should contact Progress, since it was an issue with the database.
That's where I am right now. The web server is running on a PIII 733 Win2k
Pro machine. Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

Thanx,
Alan

I didn't keep the previous emails on this subject, but I've gotten this
stuff to work in multiple environments. It can be a pain. What exactly is
the problem?

Bad news, Anton;
Seagate is bowing out of the problem. Here's an excerpt from
their last
reply:
"We are unable to produce a solution to an issue that relates
to the
functionality of a specific database. It is important to note that other
DB manufacturers that have had this issue have released patches so that
any (not just Crystal) applications that operate under the context of the
local machine can have visibility to the DB. Of further interest is the
fact that most other Databases do not have this issue. Have you considered
using a database that does not have this issue or that creates a patch to
help their users?

It appears, in this case, that Crystal is limited by the functionality of
the Database as well as the fact that there is no patch available from the
DB manufacturer."

I got this late Friday afternoon. I've not tried contacting
Progress again
yet. I might try that today. Oh, well. Guess I'll live with it as a
service for the time being.

Thanx,
Alan

Hi Ted,

the problem is the "looping logon" problem, that from the series of e-mails
on this subject, appears to be a problem with Progress not being registered
on the local machine (in the registry), but only in the user section of the
registry (someone stop me if I've got this wrong).

The result is that when the 'refresh' button on the Crystal Web Server is
activated, upon clicking this, the user is asked for a database logon UserID
and Password. I've tried all of my combinations of UserIDs and Passwords,
but I don't have one for the Vantage Progress DB... (e.g. when I log on to a
report in Crystal through ODBC, I don't give a user ID & Passwrod at that
stage... there isn't one set-up).

But the Web Component Server asks for one anyway...

I've had to disable the 'refresh' button on the Web Component Server, so my
users see the reports from when I last ran them.

Apparently if the Pageserver is disabled as a service and run from the
command line, things work. I'm trying this later today.

But if you do know how to get this running as a Service I'd be delighted to
hear it!

Here's my set-up: Windows NT 4 Workstation hosting - Crystal Reports 8 Web
Component Server, Microsoft Internet Information Server 2. Connection to
Vantage 4 DB through ODBC to Server.

Any input is greatly appreciated.
