How about a webcam with an active motion detector software.

Just curious, do you have employee photo's displaying in data collection. I
make it a point to tell everyone during training. If you are standing at the
station using the mouse or keyboard and your picture is not on the screen it
will be grounds for a written warning and possible termination.

I have tried several methods (with the help of this list) to help, but
not solid single answer.
1. create a system user for the employee and require it to use a
password for DC (user profile) and then select that user in the Shop
Floor Employee screen.
(this assumes the employee does not want to share the password).
2. create a barcode for employee punch in that uses a "non standard"
keyboard character and modify all shop ids to use this (example is 9023'
for an id) then take away the keyboard and only give them a number pad.
(this requires them to use the badge, but the badge can be left for the
"friend" to use, and taking away the keyboard does slow down data entry
for a while).
3. a separate timecard system to validate against. (being a secure
facility we have RFid photo badges we have to wear at all times, and
must use to enter and exit the building. This provides a separate
validation on "who's here" by storing it's information in a separate
DB).
4. use a list of employee's punched in for "fire safety" validation.
Run drills regularly where supervisors are responsible for validating
"everyone is out of the building" by comparing the list of punched in
employees to those standing outside. Include this in the fire safety
guidelines and come down hard on violators.

Hope some of these thoughts guide you to a solution that works for you.
