Disconnecting users via Promon (Vantage 6.1)

Tamara,

Try logging in to the server as the local administrator and then launch
Promon.

I deal with this same issue inconsistently, consistently. And, I used to
be able to 'kill' that users session, but now I'm unable to 'kill' that
session.

Any suggestions would greatly help this minor issue, instead of
'stopping the dB'.

Thank you for posing this question.

Subject: [Vantage] Disconnecting users via Promon (Vantage 6.1)

Good morning!

Once in a while some of our users will start getting 'Error 0' in
Vantage; when this happens now I'll go into Promon and I will see a
*bunch* of licenses being tied up by old ODBC sessions - many having a
lock open for several days or even a week. The logins are not 'in
limbo'. I've already gone down the 'check-list' of issues that can cause
'error 0' and am reasonably certain we are experiencing a 'number of
connections' issue.

Rather than shut down the Progress server and restart it, is the general
concensus that I can kill old sessions using Promon to release the
connections? The ODBC sessions are easily identified by the user name
(and the fact that they have been open for several days, opened at
varying times *following* the last Progress server restart) so I know
I'm not closing 'special' system logins such as 'apw', etc.

Does anyone know of a fix to allow the release of licenses once an ODBC
session is completed? Or perhaps there's some process one can run to get
the Progress server to re-check and clear out old logins? I've heard of
a reference to 'allowing ODBC license re-use' and I'm wondering if
perhaps I have this setting turned on, causing my problem? (I recently
rebuilt our Vantage server so there may be some 'tweaking' left to
do)...
