Engineering time

In order for Engineer to log in time, you have to release the job. I have
pushed Epicor really hard to allow certain operations (engineering) or
assemblies to be able to be logged into prior to the job being released.
Vantage could do this by having the option to release by assembly (have a
assembly for engineering time) or have a check box in the operation to
allow time to be logged before it is released. For those companies that
don't want the option, by clicking to release a high level assembly
(assembly 0), it would automatically release all lower level assemblies.

In our case, it causes problems with inventory and purchasing when we have
to release a job before it is engineered because the job template comes
from the quoting module (and configurator) and the quote isn't always
accurate.

Call Epicor and add your name to the suggestion. The call number is
788.989. This call number is related to scheduling, but would also be
helpful for this case.

We use data collection for our shop employees, but questions have
come up with recording engineering time as well. I would appreciate
any ideas of what others are doing in this regard. Are separate jobs
created just for engineering projects? If not what are they posting
too?

On sample orders we add Seq 005 Work Center "E001" for engineering to post
labor against. We do not use this for costing but for prioritizing work for
engineering, finding out in Engineering who did the work, finding out how
long it really takes to create prints, we also send out a global alert when
the operation is marked complete telling Production Control, Foreman,
Purchasing, etc... that another set of prints are ready for review.
Purchasing/Foreman can then look for any special dies or material
requirements. All part of reacting fast to new business and staying on the
same sheet of music.

When an order is approved by our contract administrator, he creates the job.
He adds an Engineering assembly to every job - it contains sub assemblies of
First Submission, Checking, ASub, Production Drawings, and Miscellaneous.
This takes place just prior to the job going to Engineering. The engineer
still has to add their assemblies to the job, but can clock into the
appropriate operation while they're designing it.

We create separate jobs for Engineering. The hard thing is to get the
engineers to use data collection. We set up 12 hour shifts for these guys
as they are on salary. One department has the engineers record their time
and the project guy enters the time. We have also found that the project
manager helps keep the cost together between the actual job and the
engineering time.

I instructed the Engineers to create their own job number scheme. The deal
with improvement projects so their job number system is like IP0001, IP0002
et cetera. At my last job, we had New, Modified and Proto type tooling
jobs. So we had them use N0001, M0001 and P0001 respectively.

This made the job very easy to isolate in the different reports that we ran.

We set up jobs for development and R&D and the engineers fill out a weekly
timesheet that is input into Labor Entry. If there is engineering time
required on regular production jobs we add an engineering operation and they
report their time to that. They could just as well do data collection but
we do not have a data collection pc in the office and I don't want to waste
full licenses for them to clock into jobs.
