Error 132

To Todd and Sherri!

Resolution found, thanks to Sherri. I ran a query to Excel showing
pertinant fields from "Customer" table. I found which Customer
had "2" as the "CustNum". I then went into Customer File Maintenance
and deleted the customer. This seemed to fix the problem!!

Great solution for a company that has not implimented Vantage yet.
The error was caught before we went live. If issue happened after
going live, with 100s of customers, and a myriad of quotes, orders,
and jobs tied to them, this solution would be a nightmare!

Thanks again to both of you!!

Alan

Has anyone come across an Error 132 when attempting to add a new
customer? I discovered it 2 days ago and Epicor has yet to provide
much of a solution.

Here is the full report:

From a quote or at the Master Maintenance level (Customer Table),
when you either hit "Insert" on your keyboard or go to the "Customer"
menu and select "Add", before the "Customer Entry" form appears, the
error message dialogue box appears saying, "**b_Customer already
exists with Company "FMI" Customer 2. (132)"

When I click "OK", a second error appears saying, "**Unable to update
Customer Field. (142)"

Nothing happens after you "OK" out of second error. The Customer
Entry form never appears.

Please let me know if you have seen this before and what the
resolution and cause was. Customer Service is saying that one of the
customer records either has a duplicate ID or a blank ID, but I
cannot find either of these conditions.

Thanks,

Alan Palmer
Glen Woods at M&M Manufacturing had this issue back in April of 2003 but there were no followup posts about it. Not sure if he is still involved with Vantage or at M&M but his email address was: <mailto:gwoods@...> gwoods@... Perhaps if they ever resolved it there he might have some advice to share.

The only thing I can think of is a blank Customer ID in the Customer table or perhaps some other oddity in a Customer ID. Maybe you could do a quick RB report listing all the Customer ID's and their corresponding number. Another thought is the possibility of a special character in an ID, such as a comma or semi-colon, since the ID is a character field.

Error 132 is a Progress database error. The description is shown below.

Message Number: 132

** <file-name> already exists with <field/value...>. (132)

You have set fields used in a unique index equal to those of another

record in the file.

You should check the customer table. It is trying to create a customer
record with a company of "FMI" and a custnum of 2. According to the
error, this entry already exists in the database table. These 2 fields
are a unique index for this table so it will not allow you to add
another one.

If it is not actually in the customer table, maybe someone has a process
that is hung up that was also trying to create a customer entry for
company "FMI" and customer number 2.

Alan,

It is not complaining about the custid field, it is complaining about
the custnum field. The customer.custnum field is a sequential number
behind the scenes that is used in the customer table.

Customer custnum field = A unique integer assigned by the system to new
customers by the customer maintenance program. This field is used as the
foreign key to identify the customer in other files such as OrderHed or
InvcHead. The end user should never need to know about the value of
this field.

See if you have a record in the customer table that has company = "FMI"
and custnum = 2.

Ooops. Sorry - RB = Report Builder. Seeing as how you asked then it might not be so simple since you probably hav enot used it. Besides, it is going away with Vantage 8.0. Great report tool for dirt simple little file displays.

I think Sherri's point about looking at the CustNum field would be more on target than my thinking to look at CustID. I am now wondering if the routine than spins through the CustNum values to find the last one is somehow messing up when trying to add a new Customer. The Customer table is somewhat unique in that the true index (CustNum) is not really visible or used at the user level. This allows the CustID to be able to be changed but all the other references in the database remain as the CustNum. Useful if the ID is based on customer name and that name changes.

I don't recall how the CustNum is detemrined - whether upon adding a new customer the add routine reads down to the last one and then adds one to that or if it is store somewhere in another table - like starting check number. All it says in the data dictionary is "a unique number assigned by the system...".

Todd,

Thanks so much for the advice! I did check for special characters and
found none in Customer ID. Vantage is new for me, what is the "RB
Report"?

Customer table or perhaps some other oddity in a Customer ID. Maybe
you could do a quick RB report listing all the Customer ID's and
their corresponding number. Another thought is the possibility of a
special character in an ID, such as a comma or semi-colon, since the
ID is a character field.
