I have noticed that around end of month when accounting is running some large and/or resource intensive reports, we sometimes have issues with slow performance throughout the company. on occasion, I have to restart the Appservers & Database, due to a large number of employees' Vantage programs not responding.

After searching around EpicWeb, I found instructions for implementing additional AppServers for the purpose of grouping users. Does this sound like something that would help alleviate our issues?

My thought process is that, if I put accounting on their own AppServer, and they started casuing issues, I could just restart their AppServer without having to kick our CSRs and shop employees out of Vantage.

If this does sound like something that would be beneficial, is the implementation of AppServers pretty simple if I follow my Epicor-provided instructions? Any risks associated?

Thanks!

Jay
I would recommend that you are very careful with restarting appservers while
accounting is in the middle of doing anything, that can potentially lead to
corrupted data.

To answer your question though, yes, it could be beneficial.

Are you planning on doing this through another physical server entirely, or
just another AppServer within OpenEdge?

Since you mention the danger of restarting AppServers when processes are running, what would be the typical fix if a problem BAQ or large report has slowed everyone's system to a grinding halt. I know that the correct course of action would be to increase hardware capability until this isn't a problem, but short of that, is there a way to "kill" a task that has been started or regain performance without a complete restart of the AppServers & Database?

Thanks for the tips!

Sometimes I've been able to narrow down the specific PID that has crashed or hung and kill that one specifically through the task manager in order to avoid restarting the app server.. you could try that.

What he said, but that should only be done as a last resort, and only on
something that is ONLY reading data, not that would be writing data in any
way.
