Indirect Labor Adjustments

Kathy,

I know this was yesterday-but another tool that we use is the review of shop
warnings-one of our production control people does that every morning for
the previous day and that helps catch any errors in quantity reporting, as
well as give production control heads up for scrap quantities and other
problems that show up. This, combined with having supervisors review the
labor for the previous day every morning, makes our error correction
immediate-"what happened yesterday?" being a lot easier to answer than
"what happened six weeks ago?"

This may sound strange but what is you procedure for labor editing? When
you say daily does that mean that a supervisor looks at each employees labor
for the day? We also run COS/WIP once a month about 10 or so days into the
next month, but you would be amazed at how many times I get people telling a
labor entry was incorrect and I find it was two months ago!! Usually it
deals with qty's. I guess what I'm looking for is an easy way to spot those
mistakes when they are made. Something we haven't been able to get our
hands around.

We are using 5.00.329 and we also do our labor editing daily and run COS/WIP
once, about 10 days after the month end. This has been working fine for us.
All of the labor adjustments have been made by that time.

I was wondering how some of you might deal with labor corrections involving
moving labor from indirect to job-related. I know that my ability in
version 3.0 to go back and change the labor detail will go away when I
upgrade (soon I hope) to 4.0 and above. I understand that a labor
adjustment can be made to get labor into a job, but what I am not figuring
out is how to make the corresponding adjustment to get the labor out of the
indirect side. I don't mean G/L corrections as those could be handled.
What I mean is the way the adjustments would affect things like the
indirect/direct reporting that is in the employee efficiency report and
other such attempts to determine indirect vs direct for employees,
departments, etc. The job adjustment does show up on that report, but there
seems to be no mechanism to adjust the indirect side of the correction.
Also, the ability to make the changes visible so that someone else doesn't
come along and think the same change needs to be made because they can't
easily see the history of the change. Labor edit does show the job
adjustment for labor, but again you don't see any corresponding change in
the indirect labor side.

Any words of wisdom on this issue?

Your ability to make labor adjustments on Version 4 goes away only after
running the COS/WIP program. So, depending on how often you run that
program, you may or may not be able to adjust your labor as before. We post
COS/WIP once per month and I check with the folks who change labor to make
sure they have their corrections made BEFORE I post. Generally, they make
daily corrections.

To address the indirect question:
Daily correction of labor seems to be your best solution. From there, G/L
entries are one avenue. The dollars are at least correct then.

I was told that you can no longer correct after the labor has been pulled to
a payroll and posted. That is something I wanted to look into when I get my
test machine going. Can you confirm that? Better labor edit efforts would
absolutely help our situation, but I will always have the guys who do a lot

Since we run and post COS/WIP a week or so after month end, we can change
most of what we need.

I thought I recalled reading on this list that just running COS/WIP will
lock labor records too. Darren, was that you? Can you verify that for

Our supervisor reviews the employees labor everyday and adjustments are made
in the Data Collections-Labor Edit. It sounds like you are making
adjustments to labor in the Job Cost Adjustment-Labor Adjustment. We do not
use the Job Cost Adjustment-Labor Edit.
