Making Space on Drive

Two other things you can do if you are really desperate for space are
to reduce the size of the recycle bin (right click - properties)
which is set to 10% of the drive size by default, and to reduce the
size of the event log files (event viewer - properties for each log
file). I used this trick to help force WIN2K, Office XP Std,
Antivirus, and a few other programs onto a 2GB drive.
Probably won't gain much, but when you need every MB you can get ...

Good Luck

I have moved my database to a different drive following Troy and
Mark's advice and that went fine. Is there any other aspects of
Vantage that I can move to another drive in order to create yet more
space on the C: drive?
If you want to take the time, you can Uninstall Vantage and/or Progress and install them on any drive that you wish on the server. This will most likely mean reinstalling Client workstations as well, but if you need the room and have the time, live it up...

Has a really sweet utility, DiskData that lets you easily identify where

Goto control panel / system / etc - set the swap file for -C- to zero ... at
the same time set the swap file on your second drive to whatever seems
reasonable.

Reboot and the swap file on your -C- drive will now be on the second drive.

Performance wise - consider this - On a Vantage server:
* The operating system will load programs from the -C- drive
* Swap file is going to get used by the operating system unless you have
tons of memory
* Vantage & Progress "Programs" will be loaded as required
* The Vantage Database itself is going to take hits ( you can split this
into 2 drives if you want )

**** In a perfect world I would have each of these on a separate hard drive
- just for speed.

As a side note --- next time you are going to load a desktop PC with either
Win-2000 or Win-XP - consider using 2 hard drives. Load all software on
drive -1- .... put the swap file on drive -2- ... use the built in Backup
utility to back up the first hard drive to the second hard drive. Two
things happen - first the PC will be much faster with the swap file on the
second hard drive and secondly you will have a "Local" backup of the hard
drive in case of a crash, corrupted registry, or whatever. Hard drives are
getting cheap and a local restore can be performed from 'Safe' mode while a
network restore cannot.

Oh well, hope this helps.

My $.02 worth and keep in mind I have not followed this thread very closely.

I seem to remember doing as you described but I had to also delete the
actual swap file before the space became available. I am fuzzy on the
details but I remember setting the swap file to zero on -C- and adding it on
another drive. I rebooted and -C- was still full after the reboot. I had
to delete the swap file itself (from DOS) and reboot to get the space back.

Let me know if you run into this and I will try to find exactly how I did
the above. I am no expert by any means so don't delete anything based on
this unless you are really sure it is necessary.

Instead of setting the swap file on the first drive to 0 and deleting it,
set it to about 20 meg and let it go. This will get written to on boot up
and never be accessed again. On NT4.0 you must have some small type of swap
file on the system drive in order for NT to write debugging info to it
incase of a crash.

If you want to take the time, you can Uninstall Vantage and/or Progress and
install them on any drive that you wish on the server. This will most
likely mean reinstalling Client workstations as well, but if you need the
room and have the time, live it up...

I have moved my database to a different drive following Troy and
Mark's advice and that went fine. Is there any other aspects of
Vantage that I can move to another drive in order to create yet more
space on the C: drive?
