OT Server OS Reinstall

Todd,

If this is the only way a significant number of users can do their daily
jobs, how much down time can you afford ?

You could try a backup & restore to new system (as long as they are close
hardware wise).

If your 3 disk array is already fully allocated, I would add a drive or 2
and expand the capacity of the raid. This will take sometime for the
controller to handle all the busy work Then I would find a software package
to resize the system partition using some of the newly created free space on
the array.

A quick look around for such a package with windows 2003 support found this:

http://www.partition-manager.com/corporate/

$300 might seem like alot of money - but the savings in downtime more then
justifies the expense.

My 0010 bits - Good Luck,

Charles

I am having some disk space issues on a Win 2000 member server due to a
small system partition. My plan is to reformat the drives into a single
partition or at least a larger system partition, install Server 2003 and
return it to duty. I have documents on this server that are linked to
Vantage through document management. I am wondering if anyone knows off
hand if I will have a problem giving this server the exact same name
during reformat. Will I be able to get it into my domain with the same
name? It would create quite a problem if the links are broken due to a
different server name.

I believe as long as the patch is the same, it should not matter.

Todd,

I have ghosted NT 4 Domain controllers that are also Vantage servers as well
as file & print without any issues.
Started with 2000 things got iffy - mostly related to dynamic disks.
When it works it sure saves a boat load of time.

How many disks make up your array?
How many additional disks can you fit into your system?
and last but not least...
Are you adding new disks or just want to resize the disks you have ?

Sorry about the 20 questions,

I have four disks, I can add two more. System came with a 4GB system
partition and it is too small. This is a terminal server and user
profiles and Vantage temp directories are filling it and causing
problems. Just want to reformat to make larger partition. Don't want to
lose any data links using UNC so I cannot afford to change the name of
the machine.

Where is your swap file and how large is it?

You can get quite a boost if performance by moving the system swap file off
the raid 5 and placing it on a dedicated drive. This also frees up valuable
space on the system partition.

I have already pared the page file down considerably on the system
partition. Performance isn't a problem at this point.
