MS SQL - Progress Replication

Excuse my ignorance, I understand the concept of a dts (MS Sql 2005
changes this), how is the sql database created. Is there a way to
"clone" the Progress data structure to a sql db? Can I use the one
Epicor provides ? Do you have any good ideas where I can learn more on
this? The idea of updating a MS Sql database daily and having it able to
connect into Sharepoint is very attractive.

Hi,

I create a sql dts service. You can alternatively create a named
server, or use openrowset or other distributed queries. If a table
extract takes more than 20-30 seconds I only select the fields I
actually use. If you aren't using the Characterxx fields taking these
out dramatically improves performance.

Take care,

Steve

How are you doing your extracts, I can deal with 4 minutes :-). I do
have SQL server running but do not want to run Vantage on SQL.

Hi Keith,

What you are describing is sql functionality, so I'm guessing you would
need to run Vantage on sql, and then you'd be able to do this.

We're doing massive extracts from vantage into sql, and you are correct,
life is very good. The database is way faster, and report writing is a
snap.

We are porting all of the report builder listings, e-mails, document
prints (who really likes crystal anyways?), and a new
sales/bookings/operations dashboard over to the sql system.

The Vantage server is much faster since we have split the load to the
sql box, and the users are happier because they get their new reports in
minutes instead of weeks. If a user wants a new listing it is normally
just a new sql view instead of a tedious bam, report builder session, or
other Neanderthal tool.

We are using a combination of Microsoft office, asp, vbscript, and cold
fusion's report builder as delivery mechanisms.

The only down side is the database replication, which is taking around 4
minutes with a 1.7GByte database.

Take care,

Steve

I would like to use SQL or dump Progress to SQL for reports, third party

the pros and cons of running Vantage on SQL? Would it be better to do
something like your doing running it on both? Or would it be beneficial
for reports to just dump data from Progress into SQL and run reports.
Also, how do you do this, special software or just Progress code?

Hi Joe,

We aren't actually running Vantage on sql yet, but I'd dearly like to
principally because we have half a dozen people here that understand
sql, and no-one that wants to understand progress.

As you know sql has the enterprise manager and a slew of documentation
if you need it in the first place. For reporting applications a report
builder query that can take upwards of several minutes seldom takes more
than a few seconds in sql.

As soon as we run vantage on sql we can do modern things like replicate
the database, perform automatic failover to an alternate server, have
easier access to our extranet services, tie Vantage to other external
applications without dealing with merant drivers, ...could probably keep
going all day long on this one. While we might be able to do these
things in progress, I hate to think of the dead-ends, problems, and
sketchy/incorrect documentation we would have to pore through.

I guess I haven't actually used tech support from Vantage on the
progress database, and I guess I'm not sure when if ever I would. Can
you offer reasons here? The progress problems I've had I dealt with via
progress help and chat rooms. I've never encountered sql data integrity
problems like progress seems to have.

Take care,

Steve

Take care,

Steve

Somewhere a while ago I read or dreamed that there was a way to create a
MS SQL database and have the Progress Vantage database replicate or
synchronize with it. Does this sound familiar to anyone or was this one
of my had to much of work dreams..... I am interested in some
BI/Sharepoint connectivity and MS SQL is easier for me to deal with (at

work. Support on this product is very thin (waiting 3 weeks on a call so

Yes, I have had Progress errors. I figure as long as Epicor could help
me out, I wouldn't have to Progress help, chat rooms, etc. Plus we pay
for Epicor's help. I know all the pro's, and you mentioned a bunch of
them, for going to SQL with our Vantage database. I am trying to think
of and ask anyone else, if they see any cons.

Take care,

Steve

I have often thought of the benefit of using SQL instead of Progress on
our Vantage server. However, I was always told Progress is faster, Tech
Support understands Progress more, and it was just overall better to use
Progress.

I would like to use SQL or dump Progress to SQL for reports, third party
software connectivity, data conversion from other systems, etc. What are
the pros and cons of running Vantage on SQL? Would it be better to do
something like your doing running it on both? Or would it be beneficial
for reports to just dump data from Progress into SQL and run reports.
Also, how do you do this, special software or just Progress code?

What you are describing is sql functionality, so I'm guessing you would

We're doing massive extracts from vantage into sql, and you are correct,

At my last company, we switched to SQL Server. Vantage didn't run very well
on it. We had errors that Progress users didn't get, we had database
corruption, we had ineffective support from Epicor, we had a lot of downtime. It was
a BIG mess. We moved back to Progress.

They may have fixed all these problems.

To say that Progresses SQL Server support is a kludge does a horrible
injustice to kludgey systems. First, even if you run SQL Server as the data
repository you will still have to have Progress running to house the
meta-data. Second, count on at least a 50% performance hit and that's being
conservative. Third, rather than reducing the number of data errors, in
practice, SQL users typically report considerably more errors than Progress
users.
