[Off Topic] Server Replication

My experience with this type of software and databases is negative. It
really doesn't matter the OS or the database. While the server may roll
over and use the same IP address, the Vantage clients will all be
disconnected. In the event of a hardware crash, the rollover is usually
pretty quick, but in the event of a software crash, the rollover may take
some time. I've tried this type of software using Vantage 3.0 and it would
pick up the name, IP and everything. The biggest issue was that all of the
clients would get disconnected. Vantage clients don't recover very well
from this type of thing. It didn't matter how quickly the backup server
picked up. One of the other issues that I didn't like was the amount of
network bandwidth that the communication between the two servers used up. I
ended up putting in a second NIC in each computer and creating a subnet
between the two. There were also problems with the lag in the information
going back and forth. None of this solves network equipment problems
either.

On the other hand, they work great with stuff like Exchange server. 100%
availability with Exchange; I couldn't recommend it more!

Here's an odd duck topic for the day.

Server replication.

I'm researching a product from Computer associates called "BrightStor
High-Availability Manager".

The basic jist of this software is:

Do real time replication of one server to a backup box over a LAN or WAN.
In the event that the primary box fails ( hardware crash or software lock )
the backup box assumes the Name, IP-Address, and functionality of the
primary box - immediately.

Sounds VERY nifty. On the other hand this is Computer Associates we're
talking about here and the reality rarely measures up to the promise.

Has anyone given this topic much thought and would anyone care to speculate
if Vantage or Exchange might work in this environment?

Note, according to the web notes one box can be the backup for multiple
servers which is even more interesting.

For mission critical apps this could be great ...

Software price is about $ 1600 ...

Ideas?
