Todd,

InoculateIT 6.0 allows you to utilize one of two different scan engines
that are built into Inoculate: Inoculate and Vet. I'm not sure what the
advantage would be to utilize one engine over the other, but in this case,
there seems to be a benefit running the Vet engine.

It looks like I solved my problem on my own. It turned out that the
InoculateIT Antivirus software was causing issues. As soon as I disabled
it the problems stopped occurring. In case anyone else uses InoculateIT on
XP, I switched the scan engine from Incoculate to Vet.

I have a number of W2K and W98 boxes. My servers are all NT4. The W98

run data collection. Most have red X's for the network mapped drives.

We have W2K client PC's talking to NT4 servers - I get the same error msg
about every other day. Click through it and everything is ok.

I also see signs of the same problem when I open explorer and see a list of
the 20 or so "Network" drives ... about 1/3 of them show a red x on the
connection indicating a loss of connection.

Never have figured it out ...

I was wondering if anybody had any similar experiences to mine with Windows
XP.
I have a couple new Windows XP boxes running on a Windows 2000 network.
There are some weird things that happen from time to time:
When I am copying or moving directories to or from the 2000 Server I'll
get an error saying "Cannot copy filename: The specified network name is
no longer available"
When working with files in Office 2000, often times the file will appear
to be locked or corrupted. - Note that these are only when dealing
with files on the Windows 2000 Server.

Steps I've taken to troubleshoot (with no success)
I've updated my current NIC driver to the most current version.
Changed the NIC settings from full to half duplex.
I've also researched this topic on Microsoft Technet and the rest of the
net and found nothing helpful.

If anybody has any suggestions I'd appreciate hearing them.

I was wondering if anybody had any similar experiences to mine with Windows
XP.
I have a couple new Windows XP boxes running on a Windows 2000 network.

This does not apply in this case, I don't think, but XP Pro was trying to
become our master browser.
It even takes precedence over W2K server. I went and disabled the computer
browser service on all the XP Pro boxes and it helped the network. I also
did this on our W2K Pro and server boxes because our master browser is our
NT4 PDC.
Before I did this our email server was knocked off the network for a short
time. No problems since.

Dave,

We have W2K client PC's talking to NT4 servers - I get the same error msg
about every other day. Click through it and everything is ok.

I also see signs of the same problem when I open explorer and see a list of
the 20 or so "Network" drives ... about 1/3 of them show a red x on the
connection indicating a loss of connection.

Never have figured it out ...

I have a number of W2K and W98 boxes. My servers are all NT4. The W98 only
run data collection. Most have red X's for the network mapped drives.
Everything seems to work. Don't know what the red X's signify. Something's
wrong but don't have a clue what to fix. It seems to work. Just looked at
my W2K workstation...no red X's.

Robert,

I believe the red x's mean that the network connections are offline. Try
going into the network card configuration - power mgmt tab on the
workstation, and see if the box "Allow the computer to turn off this device
to save power" is checked. If so, uncheck it. See if that makes a
difference.

When I am copying or moving directories to or from the 2000 Server I'll
get an error saying "Cannot copy filename: The specified network name is
no longer available"
When working with files in Office 2000, often times the file will appear
to be locked or corrupted. - Note that these are only when dealing
with files on the Windows 2000 Server.

Steps I've taken to troubleshoot (with no success)
I've updated my current NIC driver to the most current version.
Changed the NIC settings from full to half duplex.
I've also researched this topic on Microsoft Technet and the rest of the
net and found nothing helpful.

If anybody has any suggestions I'd appreciate hearing them.

Robert,

I believe the red x's mean that the network connections are offline. Try
going into the network card configuration - power mgmt tab on the
workstation, and see if the box "Allow the computer to turn off this device
to save power" is checked. If so, uncheck it. See if that makes a
difference.

It looks like I solved my problem on my own. It turned out that the
InoculateIT Antivirus software was causing issues. As soon as I disabled
it the problems stopped occurring. In case anyone else uses InoculateIT on
XP, I switched the scan engine from Incoculate to Vet.

You know... you can exclude certain files and folders from the scanning.
Sometimes that eliminates conflicts. Believe me, running McAfee on our
network, if it's conflicts you're talking about... I've had 'em.

It looks like I solved my problem on my own. It turned out that the
InoculateIT Antivirus software was causing issues. As soon as I disabled
it the problems stopped occurring. In case anyone else uses InoculateIT on
XP, I switched the scan engine from Incoculate to Vet.

I was wondering if anybody had any similar experiences to mine with Windows
XP.
I have a couple new Windows XP boxes running on a Windows 2000 network.
There are some weird things that happen from time to time:
When I am copying or moving directories to or from the 2000 Server I'll
get an error saying "Cannot copy filename: The specified network name is
no longer available"
When working with files in Office 2000, often times the file will appear
to be locked or corrupted. - Note that these are only when dealing
with files on the Windows 2000 Server.

Steps I've taken to troubleshoot (with no success)
I've updated my current NIC driver to the most current version.
Changed the NIC settings from full to half duplex.
I've also researched this topic on Microsoft Technet and the rest of the
net and found nothing helpful.

If anybody has any suggestions I'd appreciate hearing them.

Todd,

InoculateIT 6.0 allows you to utilize one of two different scan engines
that are built into Inoculate: Inoculate and Vet. I'm not sure what the
advantage would be to utilize one engine over the other, but in this case,
there seems to be a benefit running the Vet engine.

It looks like I solved my problem on my own. It turned out that the
InoculateIT Antivirus software was causing issues. As soon as I disabled
it the problems stopped occurring. In case anyone else uses InoculateIT on
XP, I switched the scan engine from Incoculate to Vet.

run data collection. Most have red X's for the network mapped drives.
Everything seems to work. Don't know what the red X's signify.

We have W2K client PC's talking to NT4 servers - I get the same error msg
about every other day. Click through it and everything is ok.

I also see signs of the same problem when I open explorer and see a list of
the 20 or so "Network" drives ... about 1/3 of them show a red x on the
connection indicating a loss of connection.

Never have figured it out ...

I was wondering if anybody had any similar experiences to mine with Windows
XP.
I have a couple new Windows XP boxes running on a Windows 2000 network.
There are some weird things that happen from time to time:
When I am copying or moving directories to or from the 2000 Server I'll
get an error saying "Cannot copy filename: The specified network name is
no longer available"
When working with files in Office 2000, often times the file will appear
to be locked or corrupted. - Note that these are only when dealing
with files on the Windows 2000 Server.

Steps I've taken to troubleshoot (with no success)
I've updated my current NIC driver to the most current version.
Changed the NIC settings from full to half duplex.
I've also researched this topic on Microsoft Technet and the rest of the
net and found nothing helpful.

If anybody has any suggestions I'd appreciate hearing them.
