Steve,
I've been using Innoculan for several years on a Vantage server
and on all
client PC's.
Works great and performance is not an issue !!!
However, one gotcha:
Set Innoculan on the server to ONLY scan incoming files. As in,
don't scan
programs and routines that are being downloaded from the server
going out to
the clients.
Set Innoculan on the client to ONLY scan incoming files. As
in, Innoculan
views everything from the "Servers" perspective. Even when
installed on the
client. So scanning incoming files on the clients means "Don't
scan any
files being downloaded from a server - but scan everything going
UP to a
server." Of course all input to and from floppies and CD's is
always
scanned. If you scan "Outgoing" files on the clients what you
are scanning
is all files coming out of the server and going into the client
- as in, all
Vantage programs and bmp's. Performance will die if you scan
"outgoing"
files.
If you setup Innoculan using the defaults it will scan
everything in both
directions. In this mode ANY virus scanning program will kill
Vantage
performance.
But if all files being loaded to a server are scanned as clean
and the
server itself is clean then by default any files leaving the
server also
have to be clean even though you aren't checking them.
This is one case where I firmly believe Vantage tech support
gave you bad
advice.
Whether Innoculan is the best anti-virus software on the market
is another
story.
I like it because:
* I get emails directly from the Innoculan immediately after
new signature
files are released so I can download them fast.
* Once I install the new anti-virus signature files on my
Innoculan server
all of my NT workstations are automatically updated within a few
hours and
all WIN-95/98 machines are automatically updated the next time
they are
rebooted.
* I also have it setup that on a new machine as soon as the
logon script
runs if Innoculan is not installed it will install automatically
with the
current signature files and I can setup the options I want as
part of the
auto-install.
I've had excellent performance and it has been VERY low
maintenance. I
could only wish that Vantage was as easy to take care of and had
as little
impact on performance.

I suggest people who want to use InoculatLan should check with
Vantage
Support. We had a problem last year, (don't remember what it
was), and
part of the response from Vantage Support was that Inoculatlan
and
Progress didn't get along very well. We ended up taking
InoculatLan off
the server.

Hi all,
does anything speak against to put Norton Antivirus NT or
2000
on the
Vantage Server and let Auto-Protect run in the background
?
Are there any better solutions than Norton ?
Thanks
Hendrik
