[OT] Barcodes - Code 128

Yup, "Auto Format as You Type" was set to Bold anything between asteriks.
Since I was typing "bolded" anyway I did not notice the change, just the *
disappearing. I've turned it off. If I want bold I'll Ctrl-B.

Todd,

I think you need to check Tools\AutoCorrect in MS Word for * disappearing.
It would drive me creasy when I typed 1/2 and it became ½.

One renegade customer is demanding we use Code 128 instead of Code 39 like
everyone else. I have the WASP barcode fonts and can print bar codes but
they don't scan. Does Code 128 require start/stop characters like "*" in
Code 39? The scanner manual does not mention this but does show Code 128
scanning is turned on by default. Any special characters (like a transmit)
required?
Thanks,
Todd Caughey

Todd,

I believe the answer is yes to the start and stop "*".

The other thing to check if using a "font" would be the font size.

How has everyone addressed handling Manpower Planning in Vantage. Have you
just created Custom Reports? Added the Advanced Scheduling Module? Bought
the Human Resources module from Ceasar? Or found some other solution to
managing a critical component (for us) of manufacture. Our new plant
manager, wants to know how he can plan our Manpower using Vantage and I
can't see how I can make this work to his satisfaction.

Thanks. I've tried * and played with size (thought 48 ought to be big
enough, never had to be that big with Code 39) but with no luck. Cuistomer
wants bar code for PO, Line and qty to be all one string like 31487*2*4
(their example). I will try 3 seperated bar code fields then resort to
asking them what they are trying to do.

Todd,
I think you will have a problem with any * characters in the middle. Not
sure on that, but I think that would be a bad character, but I am guessing
you knew that. I would try the separate fields as you suggest and then try
putting some other character in as a separator if they need any. If you are
running this from RB or Crystal, I have done some interesting things with
barcodes there. We don't have them implemented for everything, but we are
moving that direction.
Anyway, if you have other issues, feel free to contact me off list if you
want.

Thanks Mike, those were very helpful web sites. At least to the point of
convincing me we have to beg the customer to allow us to use Code 39 Any
scanner handling Code 128 ought to handle both. Code 128 involves special
start/stop characters that are not in the ASCII set and it also has a nasty
check-sum calculation.

In MS-Word I can make a 128 bar code using *31487* and it is odd but the *
disappear as soon as I type the second one. If I then convert to Wasp Code
128M font it won't scan but if I select that font first and type the data
the resulting barcode will scan BUT.... 31487 comes out as 55421. If I
print with caption (values print below the stripes) I get 09181619232209.
In the web sites there is a chart of characters and these values are all
exactly one less than the values in the chart. 10=* 19=3 17=1, ... I should
be seeing 20376. But at least I am seeing something. I think the checksum
might help. Can't figure out though why Word removes the * around the data.

I'm going to play around with RB and see if it will print anything when
using the Wasp Code 128M font. But thanks for the help it is getting me
closer.
