Post Upgrade Server Conflicts

Thanks to everyone for your respones.

Jay from Tech support used web-ex to take control of one of our
troubled machines. He searched the registry for 9.1a and removed all
entries. Didn't seem to help and he fumbled around a while,
rebooted, tried some things, until then he removed the -q parameter
out of the vantage.mfg file. He said that that parameter tells the
computer to start up quickly by looking for settings already in
memory. And by taking it out, it will have to look for whatever the
current settings are. Well it worked after that. Were not exactly
sure what did it, but I'll try it on another machine next week and
let you know what happens.

Have a great weekend and thanks again.

Help.

Upgraded from 5.0 to 6.0 over Thanksgiving. We added a new server in
the process so Vantage 5 was running on one server W drive, and
Vantage 6 was running on a new server V drive.

We installed the clients for 6.0 ahead of implementation weekend so
users could get a feel for the changes. This means both 5 and 6 were
on the machines at the same time. Progress 9.1A and 9.1D were also
present simultaneously. Everything has gone fine until... We are in
the process of planning another use for the old Vantage server.
However, disconnecting the w: drive from clients will prevent them
from being able to get into Vantage 6, eventhough that server has
nothing to do with 6.

With help from support I was able to get Vantage 6 working without
the w:\ drive by uninstalling both versions of progress, deleting 6
registry keys for environment variables (DLC, IDLC, IPROMSGS, PATH,
PROCFG, and PROMSGS). Then reinstalling the Vantage Client for 6.
However, after doing that, Progress Report Builder reports no longer
function from within Vantage. I'm getting error, "Unable to open
convmap file '\convmap.cp'.

With urging from support I tried to hack out everything in my
registry to do with either version of Vantage, which there are dozens
if not hundreds of entries and reinstall Vantage. Vantage wouldn't
run at all. So now I'm formatting that machine to get it working
again. We have over 50 clients that will be affected by this and
we'd rather not set them all up from scratch if we can find a
solution, but I don't like the option of deleting everything from the
registry either.

Anyone have some ideas? Also, what is the cause of this? Was it the
fact that we had multiple versions running? Prior to the upgrade
support said it would be fine? Does everyone else face problems like
this when upgrading?

Thanks,
I had a problem very similar going from 4.0 to 5.20 where some users tested on a test server. When the test server was shutdown they could not connect to the live server or if they could it took 5 or more minutes.

The problem was in their HOSTS file on the client still looking for the old server. Maybe the same in your case?

Good try, but nope, host file looks OK.

Search your clients registry for \\Oldservername this should show old
vantage entries. Should be a bunch of vantage 5.0 ocx stuff along with the
old drive mapping. Deleting them should get you going. When switching from
an old server it's a good idea to take baby steps like, switch to new box
and run live for a week then unmap old server shared drive and wait a week.
(You usually get a message that "there are x number connections do you want
to continue?". These are old ocx file references in the registry. The next
baby step might be a week later to shutdown the server and see if anyone
yells. Also it's easy to forget that this old server may be linked in time
sync's across the network, a print server, a antivirus server, or even worse
a backup domain controller.

Hello Brian,
I wrote a script to cleanup the registry on all my clients before I
installed version 5.2. If you are interested I could send it to you. RUN
AT YOUR OWN RISK!! I used it on 40 or so clients all running windows 2000.

Patrick,

The search does reveal a lot of OCX entries, but I'm getting an error
when I try to remove them. Cannot delete HELPDIR: error while
deleting key.

Patrick,

The search does reveal a lot of OCX entries, but I'm getting an error
when I try to remove them. Cannot delete HELPDIR: error while
deleting key.

Brian
It's not the hosts file but the services file in the same folder. Kill
all the service and port lines from the old version. Also add a couple of
carriage returns at the bottom. Don't know why but it helps make it work.
