Problems with 5.1

I would say no. Our supervisors are notorious for having two, three, four,
or five empty login screens hanging around. (I even have it on autostart
and they still click the buttons 6 times) I've never had the promsg error
because of it. We are on 5.0, the supervisors machine was NT4.

Here's a theory. If someone double-clicked the Vantage icon, but never
logged it, would it lock up the promsgs file during that timeperiod? I
believe 5.1 has a 'timeout' as they call it, they closes a login session
after a specified period of time. We have had his issue happen at least
three times over the past two or so months. Each time, the phenomenon
occurs, it eventually clears itself up (with no user intervention). We
didn't reboot the server or even restart Vantage. But during the time the
problem was happening it sure was odd.

Is the promsgs file locked somehow during a login? Does anyone know?

Greetings all,

Since upgrading from Vantage 4.0 to 5.1 a couple weeks ago, our users are
getting daily "System is out of resources" error messages while utilizing
Vantage. This is even when no other applications are running. I could
understand (maybe) if this was occurring on our old Data Collection Pentium
166's but it is also occurring on Pentium 4's with 256Meg Ram.

We have PC's running Win95, Win98, Win2000 and WinXP and they all exhibit the
same behavior at some point during the day.

Has anyone else encountered this problem? Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

Mike Lowe

I have had the same problem, The amount it has happened has reduced, I don't
know why.

I spoke to epicor here in Australia but could only advise me that the PC's
weren't up the scratch. I think that was an excuse for they don't know. I
changed 90 percent of operating systems to win2000 and thing are better.

Mike,
Have you taken the time to uninstall Vantage 4.0 and/or 5.0 on each client workstation, as well as unmapping the old mapped driver letters? There are a lot of registry entries, etc. that Progress uses that you may want to dispense with as they clutter and slow things down.

Mike,
Don't know if this is the same as your situation.
Got the same message at least 10 times yesterday and had to re-boot each time. Was doing testing on the Product Configurator module. Apparently, in this particular situation, for each instance an Excel look-up instruction is called-up, Excel is opened uniquely and is not closed. Sure enough, after 10 look-ups or so, system runs out of juice.
Called Epicor and they are checking this out. This situation has happened before, accdg to them.
Cheers from Down Under.

I had a similiar problem after installing 5.1. I received help from
Epicors Technical Support (phone support, option 3). This may be a
performance tuning issue. Read and perform the section "What's Next -
Finalizing Installation", "Setup and Optimization of Progress" in
the installation instructions. Setup of the parameters is important.

Hope this helps.

Odd. Just today users were getting 'low resource' errors. Also, Vantage would not allow any logins for a period of time (30 minutes or so). People already logged in could continue using Vantage, but no one else could login. There was the error "msgOpen: unable to open message file: PROMSGS." when people would try to login. After a call to Vantage Tech Support with no clue's, Vantage started working again.

Anybody have that happen or know what's happening?

I found you can actually put the PROMSGS file in your vntgwork folder to
avoid grabbing it off the network server. AE

Troy,

OLD problem and very easy to deal with.

* User double clicks to start Vantage. Gets splash screen for a spell
which then goes away. Logon screen hasn't popped up yet and user guts
impatient and double clicks again. Progress then gets VERY confused and
starts generating your error msg to the log file --- zillions of times. I
had this happen once over a weekend where the log file ended up being 800
meg. In the meantime performance on your server goes into the tank because
it's too busy spitting out these silly error msgs.

* On V4 I still have this happen about once every 6 weeks.

* Goto promon and kill ALL duplicate entries ... IE. If you see the same
PC/user in TWICE - kill BOTH.

* Goto your Vantage DB directory and double click on the *.LG file. This
should bring it up under notepad/WordPad. From menu bar click on EDIT /
SELECT ALL and then click on DELETE on your keyboard. This will delete all
entries from the log file. Hit enter a couple of times so the file has
something in it. Then click on File / Save and say yes to over writing the
existing LG file. You can do this while the DB is running without causing
any problems. If you want to see what's happening page before you clear the
file just page down to the bottom and work your way back up. Progress
eventually does time out these error loops and once you see them in the LG
file it's easy to understand why the system goes into convulsions trying to
deal with them.

Troy,
We have been experiencing the same situation since going live on 5.1, the
first of the year. I had to boost many PCs to 256 MBs of RAM. This did the
trick on most machines. Our accountant needed more (I boosted her to 384),
and I just started getting that error message after loading an additional
program onto my PC. It is not uncommon for our people to have Outlook,
Vantage, and an Excel spread sheet open at any given time. After the 5.1
install, we initially started having problems printing. Printing would lock
up on some users, until I had them close their email. Increasing the RAM has
resolved this problem as well. As someone who can remember punching 80
column cards, I never thought I would see the day where you needed so many
resources to handle business applications.
