Purchasing Price Breaks on Blanket orders

Dealing with the mess of an incorrect Purchase Price Variance (PPV) on
standard cost is the biggest issue for us. This happens when the PO is
received at a different price than was originally put on the PO. I know it
wasn't Dick's original question, but I thought I would throw it out there as
an issue to watch out for.

One frustrating thing about Price Breaks in Vantage (which I'm told is "by
design") is that whenever you change a quantity (and perhaps the date) on
a
release, it will re-apply the price breaks according to the current
quantity. This is frustrating because at times we have made PO's for a
price other than the price break, only to change the quantity later, and
it
changed the price on the PO without us realizing it. It created quite a
mess with Standard Costing among other things.

Isn't your blanket order price negotiated to the best unit price that
will
cover a total requirement (or minimum qty commitment) regardless of
releases? You just set-up the blanket order for the minimum (or total
qty),
add a projected release schedule and change as necessary. Additional qtys
can be added over and above the original order qty with no unit price
consequence if that is part of your agreement with your supplier.

If your supplier insists on a pricing per release qty, it's really just
a
straight off price list. You may want to consider keeping your blanket
order
or purchase contract off-line and just reference it in the vendor price
list. Then raise a new purchase order everytime you need a release. We do
it
this way most of the time.

Wondering if/how other companies are handling the following situation:
Set up purchasing price breaks example: 100 pieces = $5.00,
200
pieces = $4.50, 300 pieces = $4.00.
Set up blanket deliveries example: 100 pcs
05/01/2003 price should be $5.00
100 pcs 06/01/2003
price should be $5.00
100 pcs
07/01/2003 price should be $5.00

the price ends up being $4.00 because the aggregate quantity is
300.
We have blanket orders where quantities are open and added to as needed.
When quantities are added,
the aggregate quantity changes and if price breaks are set up, the price
changes.
Is there a way in Vantage (5.1) to specify blanket quantity price
breaks?

thanks,
