Queue Time in Between ops on same WC

Hello Jim,

No, we never got queue times to reflect in the due dates for operations. The last we discussed on this was that I would need to upgrade in order to get MRP working correctly (something echoed by Rob in response to this question). Unfortunately, an upgrade takes time and I was hoping for a workaround to assist in scheduling until then.

In 6.10 I am starting to change what my default queue times are for
each workcenter. What I am trying to achieve is a gap in between jobs
at a particular work center.

For example at Work Center 200 (Lathe) I want an hour in between when
one job finished and another starts.

I put a queue time of 30 min and a move time of 30 min. Then I did
Load Leveling.

Instead of a gap between jobs, it has the queue time of Job 2 overlap
with the end of Job 1 so there is no gap in between operations.

How can I achieve what I am looking for? I thought thats what the
queue time was for?

Thanks in advance!!

Ben
Hi,

I don't think the Load Leveling function is what you after. If you
just schedule using normal scheduling or global scheduling this
should have the desired affect. I think, but I am not sure, but Load
Leveling ignores such times.

Thanks for the response, but using global finite has the same result.
I wish I could attach an image, it would make it easier to see but
let me explain:

8:00 Queue
9:00 Start Production Job 1
12:00 Queue Job 2
1:00 Finish Job 1 and Start Job 2

The queue time is overlapping with the production time of the prior
job. Thus, not padding between jobs.

Any thoughts???

Thanks!

Ben,

Your queue time is idle time that the job expects to be waiting, knowing that
things don't get worked on right away in the real world.

What's happening is that the queue time makes the job wait from it's arrival
time in the wc (completion of prior WC op that got it to lathe) until it can
be worked on even if there is capacity.

Ex.
Arrives 8am. WC is idle.

Start is planned for 9am.

The queue will ignore capacity... What the system is trying to do is to put
the waiting time during time that couldn't be used anyway (like during the
run of Job 1).

If you are trying to induce a lag between jobs, I think you may be able to
look at setup time if you are not already using it...

Ben,

Can I ask why you need a 1 hr gap?

Is this for tear down or setup or ?

Well, in a perfect world we would be able to start one job immediately
after another. Instead we find that sometime we need an hour in
between one job and the next for teardown, paperwork, cleaning the
machine, etc. The list goes on. We charge for this time in our
overhead and there is no need to charge the job this time, hence not
using setup. Instead what we would like to see is a gap to keep the
schedule honest with our current conditions. If I increase the setup
time, then we will also be increasing our unit cost to the customer
because we charge for setup time.

Does that make sense? I am open to all ideas. I am just trying to
keep the schedule more clean and true to current conditions.

Thanks!

UNLESS you set you setup rate to zero, then you can put time in there and it
won't roll up in the unit cost. IIRC, you can set a different setup rate on
your resource.

Mark W.
Yes, but again we charge for setup time, not for the "pad" we'd like to insert... Hmmm, I really have to think this one through... Thanks, Mark.

Ben,

Another, less elegant, but effective option you might consider - add another
operation, same work center, use the operation (newly created) of "clean up",
set std time on it to default to 1 hr, set standard rate on it to $0/hr (in
the detail of the operation itself).

It does add an op seq to your BOO (clutter) but it should give you the effect
you are after.

In some earlier versions of 8 it would not honor the queue time of the first operation in an assembly, nor the move time of the last operation in an assembly. From what I remember move and queue between operations on a given assembly worked back to .405. There were so many scheduling engine issues in .305 it wasn't worth using. 409c works as good as it ever has and within the scope of its design doesn't have any significant bugs.

Exactly why I'm building a custom scheduling Queue. Epicor has way too many bugs and glitches! By the time you figure out the issue is a bug, your better off finding another way. If it is a bug, they might give you an option to upgrade or pay a consultant to fix it... Like they did for me on an issue.
