Setting Up New Site - Warehouses?

We’re in the process of building a new facility about 1500 feet south of our current main site. We are planning on creating a new site for this. As I am starting to setup the site, I am looking at our existing sites to somewhat mimic the setup. For each of our sites, we have 4 warehouses… a main, an inbound (receiving), an outbound (shipping), and a quality warehouse. For the three non-main warehouses, there is exactly one bin in each of them. Is this standard practice? Did we set something up weird? I wasn’t involved in the why behind the initial setup. My point is really just what good does a warehouse do if you’re only going to stick one bin in it? Why not just make a bin in the main warehouse for each of those things?

We eliminated all but one warehouse per site and everything is simpler. We’ve got 1000s of bins, 1 per identifiable physical location. Never could figure out why we used multiple warehouses originally.

The reason for the separate warehouses is so that you are consuming (or showing as available to consume) the items in the main warehouse.

If inventory is in Receiving then it means it has arrived but not yet put away so not technically available to consume

If inventory is in the Shipping Warehouse then it is boxed up and ready to send to the customer/sub-contractor so again is not available to consume

If inventory is in Quality then it needs something checking/doing to it so again is not available to consume

It does but just to confirm: where does it help show availability?

How would that differ (or improve upon) using a bin for each of those locations that was marked non-nettable?

The fields there are designed for use with Advanced Material Management and the automated move functions available there. It is a pretty slick functionality, but it requires a LOT of setup and a good chunk of transactional discipline. Look in the Help system under the Order Fulfillment topic (they may have renamed it though).

FWIW, we started with two sites in our test environment but changed to a single site with two warehouses. Here are the key considerations in our decision:

  1. We do not need separate financial statements for the two locations

  2. Purchasing and materials management staff, that need to do transactions in both locations, were constantly in the wrong site in Epicor.
