Shop Buzzers through Vantage Server

We purchased a nice little device at
http://www.softwareartist.com/TSA_BuzzerController.htm

The cost is about $500 and is working great for us.

I've been doing this for about five years now. I have some documents I
will
send off-list describing the process. It has worked extremely well for
us.
The primary issue prior was the inability to keep two clocks closely
synched. Sad to say but employee would "play the difference" of as
little
as one minute and either clock in late or out early. Now there is at
most 5
seconds difference between when Vantage shows a time and when the buzzer
sounds so they don't bother.

There is virtually no load on the server. At scheduled times it runs a
very
small program I found called Qwave that fires up, plays a wave file then
exits. Much faster than MS provided player and less memory.

Only hitch we've had is that we run through the "music input" and normal
paging cuts this out so if a page is made at the exact time of the
buzzer
it gets cut out. This happens maybe twice a year.

Yes, if the server goes down the buzzer does not sound....but neither
can
they clock in/out of Vantage so there are larger problems. The plant
supervisors have a compressed air horn they use as a backup.

Hello,

A few months ago in "Dr Vantage" they recommended running shop buzzers
through the Vanatage server using scheduled tasks (and running a cable
from
the server to the paging system).

Is anyone doing this? If so, what are the advanatges/disadvantages?
Our IT dept is concerned with the additional load on the server and if
the
server goes down, our shop buzzers go as well.

We are considering doing this using a seperate PC or finding a wireless
tone
generator.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Kelly

Kelly,

We don't actually use the Vantage server for this, but here's our setup:

Sound card in a "utility" PC in the server rack
Cable from sound card to paging amplifier
Paging amplifier runs speaker horns on the shop floor

Using Windows' "Scheduled Tasks", we run the following commands at
appropriate times:

c:\windows\system32\sndrec32.exe /play /close shift.wav
and
c:\windows\system32\SNDREC32.EXE /play /close break.wav

All servers and utility PCs have their time synced through Active
Directory, so there is no need to do this from the Vantage server. And
if the utility PC fails, I have more ;>

Our shop is setup exactly as you describe (server hooked to the paging
system for buzzers), but we run the buzzer on a different machine, not the
Vantage server. I maintain an internal time server (NTP) that all of our
servers synchronize their clocks to. This means all of our servers have the
exact time Vantage does (or vice versa). We use a program called Qwave to
play the buzzer audio file from a scheduled task - there is no additional
load (negligible). We've been running this way for 3 years - never had a
problem. Changing the buzzer times is much easier than the previous
(manual) system we had.

Qwave: http://www.sinnercomputing.com/QWave.htm
From their site: "...QWave is extremely small (6 KB - the ReadMe is larger
than the program itself) and uses the in-built Media Control Interface to
play files... QWave supports almost all Multi-Media files, including Wave,
MIDI, MP3 and MPEG." Qwave is a free (as in beer) to download.

The scheduled task:
"C:\Program Files\QWave\QPlayer.exe" buzzer.wav
