Vantage Time / Tone Generator

Not withstanding that Juliet already ruled out the WAV file option I would
caution anyone else considering it that some WAV players (like MediaPlayer
and maybe WinAmp) do not terminate themselves when done playing the file. I
was getting 20 copies a day left running and had to manually close them. I
ran into great difficulty with this on the way to our successful
implementation of server-soundcard-paging system shop bells. I ended up
using a very small (4K?) shareware program (Qwave) that starts up extremely
quickly (unlike huge media players) and terminates automatically. Just a
head up.

Let me take a stab at this one... Get a soundcard for your server, wire the
speaker output of the soundcard to the aux input on your intercom system.
Use your server's task scheduler and winamp or windows media player to
schedule and play the sound.
I would suggest Fred Flintstone's "Yabbadabbadooo!!!" as the end of day
buzzer.

I was wondering if anyone has put a relay card in their server and sent
a signal to a tone generator to sound their shop buzzer? We want to run
the time clock buzzers off a server that is synced with an atomic clock.
This way there would be no complaining about Vantage Time being
different than the buzzer time. Problem is I can't find a card that
would work for us or any software to accomplish this. I would
appreciate any help.

I have searched the archives and found information on sending wav files
to the intercom system. That option won't work for us.

TIA

Juliet

PCsignalsusa.com has a relay board that works off a serial port. It
comes with software to schedule you bells and you can use it right on
you Vantage server(runs as a service). They cost about $400, but
have been rock solid for us. If you already have a tone generator
and an amp this should work great.

We purchased a small relay box that is controlled by the com port. You might
want to try that. I can't remember where we bought it, but I've seen similar
devices in electronics shops.

Depending on the current running through the contact switch of the tone
generator, you could wire a small resistor and a NPN switching transistor to
one of the pins on your parallel port (2-9) then use the +5v from the
computer to power it. Then by sending a hex code (converted to binary) from
a DOS batch file, to the parallel port can activate the transistor and make
the contact for you. Total cost of parts is under 50 cents from radio
shack. So a simple 00000001 to turn on the buzzer, wait 5 seconds, and then
00000000 to turn off the buzzer.
