I had a teacher once who said that he used to work for the Army in a
classified area. They took a sledge hammer and a blow torch to discarded
hard drives for that very reason.

Yes, they were able to recover all the data files I requested. Isn't
that unbelieveable - after it had been Ghosted with an image.

I used Ontrack a few years ago to recover an IDE drive's data after a
tech had Ghosted a new image over the top of the data. I slaved up the drive
and Ontrack was able to do it completely over a DSL online. I think it was
$100 to see what they could recover but that came off of the $1300 I paid to
recover the data.

Most disks are sealed. It may simply be the exterior components that are damaged. One solution you might try is to find an identical drive and swap the external electronics.

If it was not powered on at the time of getting wet then it very may well comeback after drying. Swabbing the circuit board and connectors with rubbing alcohol my speed drying.

Otherwise an outfit I have had very good help from is Ontrack Data Recovery ( ww.ontrack.com ). They may be able to provide some free advice over the phone - especially what NOT to do that might jeopardize future recovery efforts.

Todd,

Thanks for the advise. I will try them. Unfortunately, our local
communities have gotten hit with flooding from the hurricanes. I have
financials on this hard drive including tax information for a company - all
the paper files have gotten destroyed. The back up was at another facility
but that also has received large amount of flooding; needless to say that
has also gotten destroyed. I praying for a miracle now.

Being that critical I think I would not even touch the drive and instead consult the experts first. It won't be cheap (a few grand at least) so somewhere a cost/benefit analysis will come into play. Insurance may cover the cost. Sorry to hear about the flood problems. With all the hurricane related problems the recovery outfits may be really busy.

I actually feel the same way --- I hoping someone in Vantage land has gone
thru this previous and would be able to recommend a company. I have read
on several web pages do not - turn on the dirt can destroy it. I'll let

Todd,

Thanks for the advise. I will try them. Unfortunately, our local
communities have gotten hit with flooding from the hurricanes. I have
financials on this hard drive including tax information for a company - all
the paper files have gotten destroyed. The back up was at another facility
but that also has received large amount of flooding; needless to say that
has also gotten destroyed. I praying for a miracle now.

If it was not powered on at the time of getting wet then it very may well
comeback after drying. Swabbing the circuit board and connectors with
rubbing alcohol my speed drying.

Otherwise an outfit I have had very good help from is Ontrack Data Recovery
( ww.ontrack.com ). They may be able to provide some free advice over the
phone - especially what NOT to do that might jeopardize future recovery
efforts.

Most disks are sealed. It may simply be the exterior components that are
damaged. One solution you might try is to find an identical drive and swap
the external electronics.

What about other sources ... backups - old systems etc .... was everything
destroyed ?

With a larger selection to choose from, it might be possible to get enough
pieces to put the whole picture back together.

As part of research for our disaster recovery planning, I saved an article
in CIO magazine about a Minneapolis company called Kroll OnTrack that does
data recovery. A Google search shows their web-site as www.ontrack.com. If
they are out of Minneapolis, maybe someone at Epicor is familiar with them?

The article did not say much about fees, but in the case study they were
able to recover customer records databases from hard drives that were
seemingly basket cases from a tornado strike.

Keep us posted on your progress.

I have used Kroll OnTrack in the past to recover data from various hard
drives. I am impressed with their service, and have yet to give them a
drive they could not recover. On average, I think I have paid
$1,500/hdd to have data recovered. For me, that has been a small price,
compared to losing the data.

If you have multiple drives, they do offer a price plan, or at least
they used to.

Dina,

I have used On Track before. They are rather expensive. They specialize in
disaster recovery (fire, flood, etc). They recently gave me an estimate to
recovery a 20 gig drive out of laptop. If I recall correctly it was about
$1100.00. You ship them the drive, disk, tape, etc, and they will generate a
pre-recovery report within 24 hours. They charge a estimate fee based on the
device they are recovering.

ranges from $600 - $2500.00

I have also spoken with a company called totalrecall - they waive their
price due to it is a disaster recovery - their price is $500.00 then $75.00
per gigabyte.

They both have a very high successful recovery rate (95%).

I used Ontrack a few years ago to recover an IDE drive's data after a
tech had Ghosted a new image over the top of the data. I slaved up the drive
and Ontrack was able to do it completely over a DSL online. I think it was
$100 to see what they could recover but that came off of the $1300 I paid to
recover the data.

I spoke with Ontrack - they have a $200.00 evaluation fee then the price
ranges from $600 - $2500.00

I have also spoken with a company called totalrecall - they waive their
price due to it is a disaster recovery - their price is $500.00 then $75.00
per gigabyte.

They both have a very high successful recovery rate (95%).

Dina,

As part of research for our disaster recovery planning, I saved an article
in CIO magazine about a Minneapolis company called Kroll OnTrack that does
data recovery. A Google search shows their web-site as www.ontrack.com. If
they are out of Minneapolis, maybe someone at Epicor is familiar with them?

The article did not say much about fees, but in the case study they were
able to recover customer records databases from hard drives that were
seemingly basket cases from a tornado strike.

Keep us posted on your progress.

I actually feel the same way --- I hoping someone in Vantage land has gone

I sent a drive to they years ago; from one of our VP's desktop PC that
wasn't backed up. Unfortunately, they could only read the windows and
program files directories, and not much of the data. But it only cost the

trust anyone else.

Where are you that you got flodded? Web site looks like PA? I'm in
Asheville, NC and we've gotten about 3 feet (not a typo) of rain in the
last two weeks, from the two storms!!
