Subcontracted Operations

Hi Len,

And I happened to mention that to Gerry off list....when you have many
jobs using the same service, it is a much better route, but it means
updating all BOMs using that service and then creating the POs isn't a
big deal.

Our production is still small enough that we use the other route at the
moment. But they are aware what needs to be done if production ramps up
again (hopefully soon!).

Good Day M:

If you want an outside-the-box idea......

One thing we have done is to create a Part# ( normal stockable Part#
) for the operation, so the plating for 10027 is PL10027; then, we
create a BOM consisting of the Casting-Part#'s and the PL10027-Part#. A
normal PO gets released for PL10027; then, when the PO is received, the
PL10027 goes into stock and issued to the WO. When the WO is closed, the
cost of PL10027 gets captured.

Actually we do not have a machine shop, so we have "M" numbers for
the machining for many parts. This allows us to Quote the "M" numbers,
track usage, query in ACT, query in ITHistory, etc.

I should mention that we are going to E9 and will probably start
dong the normal "Outplant" operation to a WO system. I got out-voted.
But we just did our first training, so there is still a chance I might
save the system.

The subcontract operation in Vantage works great. We did add a resource
group called "Outside Process" that we associate with any subcontract.

Hello all. We have a number of manufacturing services that are outsourced, such as, welding, painting and powder coating. I'm considering using a Resource Group to handle outsourced manufacturing processes and would like to know if any of you are using the method to handle these types of operations and how it works for you.

Gerry
This might seem obvious, but did you consider using the Subcontrator operation in Vantage? We use that and it provides great visibility for everyone from Purchasing to Manufacturing to Shipping and receiving. This sure beats the way we used to do it! (Don't ask!)

[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
Yes, I've looked at using the subcontract operation. If I understand
correctly, since we don't pay these subcontractors by the hour, someone
would have to take the cost of the services and enter a number of labour
hours equal to the fee. Is that correct? Or is there a simpler method of
entering the actual cost?

Currrently, we use part numbers for outside operations. E-coating, for
example, is $1 a unit. If it costs $50 to powder coat a given part, we add
50 units of the Ecoat part to the BOM. We manually transfer the parts being
coated to and from the supplier's warehouse. I noticed the auto-move feature
in the subcontract operation, that could automate the movement process.
