Subject: [Vantage] Upgrade Help

Ok - Let me start by saying I'm a novice when it comes to upgrading.
Please
be gentle with me!!
I'm doing a test upgrade from 4.0 to eventually 6.1 and I'm stuck at 5.0
right now.

I'm doing this test upgrade on a single pc, not on our network and with
the
client installed locally.
I have our 4.0 db copied to the test pc with the schema and db
conversion
done and I can login somewhat.

That's where the problem begins.
I don't know how to setup Progress Explorer. I read the docs for that
but
I'm still confused.

With the Default db that's listed in Progress Explorer running (epic50)
, I
cannot login.
I get "The db e:\epic50\vantage\db\vantage is in use in multi-user mode.
(276)." Error.

When I stop the default db (epic50) I can login normally and see data
normally.

Second question may be related.
When I can login, I try to edit a RB report to show the new paths to the
db
and it will not connect.
What do I put if anything in place of tcp and I assume I put epic50 for
the
service instead of vantage like I did for 4.0
I've also tried putting 127.0.0.1 or localhost in the host name portion
of
options without success.

Any help or comments are appreciated. Sorry for the long post.

Jim Moore

Jim,
Answer to part one. In order to log into the DB in single user mode you
must have the DB stopped. This is fine and normal. When you upgrade the DB
it is faster to do it this way anyway. Once you finish the upgrade to 6.x,
you will install 6.x on the server in the normal (shared) method. After,
you will copy the DB to that serer and start the DB. This will put it into
the normal shared mode.
As for the RB issue, I would wait to change the RB reports until you have
the final resting location of the DB. Then you can update your RB reports
once only (to the 6.x DB).
Otherwise, you are on the right track. Remember to update all the versions
of Vantage to the latest patch before you convert the DB. Then first thing
after you get to 6.x, set up any logging you would like through Business
Activity Manager.
Best of luck,
Aaron Hoyt

Aaron,
Thanks for the comments. Yeah I had planned on waiting until I get to 6.1 to
do the RB updates, but thought I would try 1 or 2 to see how much was broke.
I will just wait.
Thanks for your help. Probably more questions coming!

I am doing about the same thing that Jim is doing. I am doing a
test upgrade from 5.0 to 6.1. I plan to use a 700 mhz notebook
(upgrading to XP-pro as we speak), to load Progress 9.1C and Vantage
5.1. I plan to take a new faster workstation or notebook to load
Progress 9.1D and Vantage 5.1, 6.0, 6.1. I also will appreciate all
hints and information on this upgrade. Feel free to send to my
email below.

As for the post below, I was not aware that "Remember to update all
the versions of Vantage to the latest patch before you convert the
DB." Is this truely necessary, I had never picked up on that before
now. I thought you only had to bring the final version to the
latest patch.

Thanks!

Ann,

It prevents some problems. I don't remember for sure the version, but if
you install just the initial release of (I think 6.0 maybe one of the 5.x
versions) and no patch, when you upgrade your custom menus items are gone
forever (loading the patch after will not restore them). These types of
things are prevented by using the latest patch for each version.
Good luck,
PS When I did my 5.0 to 6.0 upgrade, I did it all from 5 to 6 on a single
700mhz notebook. It took me a long time for the first version or two, but
the later upgrades were very quick. I used the laptop so I could take it
home with me while it was doing the conversion on the seat beside me.
Worked slick.

Worked
slick.

I am doing about the same thing that Jim is doing. I am doing a test
upgrade from 5.0 to 6.1. I plan to use a 700 mhz notebook (upgrading to
XP-pro as we speak), to load Progress 9.1C and Vantage 5.1. I plan to take
a new faster workstation or notebook to load Progress 9.1D and Vantage 5.1,
6.0, 6.1. I also will appreciate all hints and information on this upgrade.
Feel free to send to my email below.

As for the post below, I was not aware that "Remember to update all the
versions of Vantage to the latest patch before you convert the DB." Is this
truely necessary, I had never picked up on that before now. I thought you
only had to bring the final version to the latest patch.

Thanks!
