Vantage 8.03.407 Client won't close

Jonathan,

I agree with you (and thought that is what I said in far fewer words)...

Investing in the most powerful hardware you can for the handful of 'power users' most companies have is well worth the investment. (Turning off power saving standby timeouts is also absolutely essential.)

Running other resource hogging applications is also a no-no... Unfortunately, even Outlook falls into that category. I suspect it shares something (perhaps something on the client side network layer) with Vantage as, whenever Vantage locks up, so does Outlook (but no other office apps do).

(And yes - that is with exhange server running on its own dedicated server - and all running over top of the line fiber network & routers).

Robert,
I have seen this problem many times before with heavy Applications and a DB. Here are some reasons this happens:
Â
1) Leaving Vantage up while the computer goes on Stand By. Vantages will error because the thread has been dropped between the Application and the server.
Â
2) Using another heavy graphical program while Vantage is up on a desktop. The desktop does not have sufficient resources to carry both applications. Vantage will lock up and not close.
Â
3) An XP Computer is using too little RAM or the hardware in the system is sub-standard to recommended hardware.
Â
I would look at the hardware in this case and not the software. When I hear about hang ups and locking I have to assume there are problems with the hardware being used. If you have a machine that is built for Heavy graphics, like a CAD machine, see if the problem is prevalent on that machine. Software is rarely the cause of what you are explaining.

You can't kill it with windows task manager?

Client apps (every version we've been on) are very sensitive to video processor used. The GUI processor can sometimes lose track of the app (& control) so it appears dead.

We are experiencing a random problem where users are unable to close

the Vantage client at the end of the day. A reboot usually forces the

client closed but this really isn't an option for our users that get in

via remote desktop. Is anyone else experienceing this problem?

(Session timeouts are NOT turned on).

TIA

Marc

I don't know what causes that but you have to right click the "vantage
globe" (system monitor) in the taskbar and click exit. Now Vantage will
close.

Early on, we found that our client software ran faster when we updated the
client to the most recent version of DirectX drivers. It's not automatically
included in the standard Windows Updates unless there's a security issue.
Food for thought...
