Vantage and Terminal Server

We've been using Vantage since May 2000 over a 128k ISDN to our remote
site via TS. We have 10 remote users, and very few problems. Due to our
old workstations, the TS users generally have a faster connection than our
local ones! Every Friday afternoon, our remote site job scheduler
starts mrp, then disconnects the session, comes back in Monday morning,
reconnects, and everything's completed, waiting for her to view the log, no
fuss, no muss.
I know our local (no pun ) network was badly laid out when we started
using Vantage, and we had terrible problems with dropoffs (high
latency?)until we redesigned, eliminating several switches and adding a
fiber gigabit backbone. Since then, pretty smooth sailing.
A couple questions: Can you ping the Vantage server from the Terminal
Server and see what your times are? Can you run MRP successfully locally
through TS?
Don't know if my rambling helped, but here it is.

Subject: [Vantage] Vantage and Terminal Server

All,

I know there have been MANY posts about how Vantage works with Terminal
Server but I want to know how many out there are successful at doing so.
I have a remote location that connects via a PPP using Terminal Server
to log into Vantage. Randomly, some users get disconnected from server
for Vantage but stay connected to the Terminal Server. Almost
consistently, when the remote site tries to process MRP (either Net
Change or Regen) it will disconnect from the Vantage db and stay
connected to the Terminal Server. I have had the carrier come and do
testing on the connection and they 'say' that the connection isn't the
issue.

I can connect via the Terminal Server locally to the database and don't
get disconnected from Vantage. This leads me to think it should be the
connection from the remote location to the server. I just want to check
all other possibilities before I complain again to the carrier. Does
anyone have any suggestions or has anyone experienced this?

Thanks,

All,

I have been moved to a different location that runs Vantage. This
location also has a remote access that logs into Vantage via a Terminal
Server.

At this remote location, they randomly get disconnected from Vantage.
They receive the 'Incomplete write to server' and other associated
errors. Has anyone else run into this? They have a dedicated PPP
connection to the main facility and the Terminal Server session itself
is still active when they get 'booted' from Vantage. This leads me to
believe that it's a Vantage issue and not the Terminal Server.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

I recently found out that for Vantage and Terminal Server to work to its
best ability that I need to have Progress loaded locally to the Terminal
Server and that Vantage itself can be on a mapped drive. I loaded
Progress locally to the TS due to the fact that some users were getting
disconnected randomly. Since I loaded it locally however, I am getting
connection issues. I followed an answer book sent to me by a support
person, that edits the .vtg and .ini files to point the Progress
executable to the local path and the .ini has the DLC and PROBUILD set
to the local paths. I am still running into some issues with the TS
users not being able to get it. Did anyone goes through this as well
and can shed some light?

Hi Jim,

We went through the same process a while ago. My memory is a little
foggy, but I remember loading progress locally on the TS and making
new .vtg and .ini files. We did get it to work, but I think there
were a few more hurdles, although I don't specifically remember what
at the moment. If you don't get a better offer of assistance from
someone else, give me a call and describe your problem more fully,
maybe it will jar my memory.

One thing to try is to make sure that the task bar clock is enabled on the
client terminal server window. This keeps a steady transmission of activity
so that the TS sees something during long downloads. Also, make sure that
the client's dsl/cable isn't dropping them periodically (that's our
problem). When they are dropped, the TS session will still be going.
