What does the "&" in front of text on a button do?

I was looking at changing the text on a “stock” button and it had an “&” in front of the text. What does that do?

Creates the underscore, and the shortcut key combination.

[ckrusen (Calvin Krusen)]

It would create an underline under the next character.

use a double ampersand to get the ampersand character to show
