For large datasets yes, BAQ Exports is the way to go.
In your Kinetic dashboard, try setting Data > Grid Model > Provider Model > Set Server Paging to true. We use that and it appears to limit the number of rows at a time our dashboards return which works for smaller data sets. I picked it up from this thread.
