Bar Code readers on the shop floor

Good morning.

I believe that is more of a programming issue than a scanner one. We have a "smart barcode" in MES for our Job#/Asm#/Op# combination on our traveler, too, and since day one (6 months already), it has worked perfectly. We had a company modify our MES screen, which included elimination of buttons, English and Spanish labeling and the mentioned "smart barcode" to name some.

The Symbol LS2208 works great with ALL these customizations.

Regards.

We're using Wasp WLS9500 Scanners for data collection to read a single
barcode on the traveller that includes Job #, Assy Sequence, and Operation
Sequence. I spent many hours a few years ago with Symbol and Intermec
scanners (don't remember if they were the models mentioned), with their
tech support people, and could not get them to read the combined barcodes.
Try to get loaners to test so you can pick the best one to fit your
needs.

We are looking to use bar code readers on the shop floor for data
collection.
We are currently using Vantage 8.03.409C and I would like to hear from
anyone that is using bar code readers on their shop floor.

If there is any advice or recommendations from the users group I would
greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

Hello Mike.

We've been using about 30 of the Motorola (Symbol) LS2208 model scanners in our shop-floor for quite some time now; we are a Steel Structure manufacturer and these scanners have been very reliable and easy to use for our operators.

We are using an Intermec SR30 which works nicely for the shop floor. It was
really easy to program them (3 simple scans).

We also use the LS2208. They're very durable, quality made and easy to program if you need to do anything special. We're in aerospace manufacturing but I have also used them in retail/distribution environments.

Info for the lean/kanban people:
Gun type scanners like the LS2208 are quicker to operate for most floor workers. In one of my previous companies, we did performance and speed tests with our staff of gun-types, pen/wand-types and the what I call the 45degree angle scanner (like the Symbol LS1203 with the button on the top). Pen/wands were horrible at scanning, often needing multiple swipes... have to go a certain speed. Plus the glass tips can be easily broken if dropped. The 45degree scanner was in the middle. Scans were one shot, but users often took a longer time to adjust the scanner to the right position before hitting the button. The gun scanner was the winner on speed and accuracy because it's naturally at a 90degree angle from how you hold it in your hand. Plus, feedback from the staff was that trigger action felt easier to use than the 45degree type which required using your thumb. Scanning work orders and other paper work can definitely speed up workflow and help eliminate human error especially if job numbers contain both alpha and numeric.
