Conversion 4 to 5.1. Any Problems?

Thanks you for the notes, on & off list.

We have run the conversion test twice now and have the luxury of having
separate servers for each of 4, 5.0 & 5.1.

We plan to doing for real a weekend in beautiful summer June.
Wish it was winter for this.

Just checking.

We plan to convert from 4 to 5, then in the same weekend from 5 to 5.1

Any comments, warnings or words of encouragement?

Babbette

I just recently did the very same conversion about 2 weeks ago. The
most important recommendation I have is to simulate the upgrade on a
Test Server. Good Luck

Babette,

Boy, there's lots of avenues you could inquire of and probably everyone approaches this conversion stuff differently. What made me the most relaxed when we went from 3.0 to 4.0 to 5.0 on the same weekend was the fact that I had done the whole conversion "in practice" several times before.

Having only one server (our LIVE server) to play with at the time, I made separate installs of 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0 on the same server. Then I followed the instructions included with each install making sure to move the database to a different location after each install so as not to corrupt the previous one. Then, when I had a good 5.0 database I was able to set up ODBC, convert RB and Crystal reports, and setup the 5.0 Client setup on as many workstations as I needed to for testing.

Each time I did the practice conversion, I made some notes of how long each step took, making sure I had every step in my notes. Also, installing the workstations ahead of time will save you quite a bit of time on the weekend of the install. There were a few workstations that we had to reinstall progress on for some reason but never figured out why the 3 or 4 out of 40 computers had to be done over again.

http://www.libertyelectronics.com/upgrade.zip This link has some of the documents that I used and made for our upgrade from 3.0 to 5.0. Maybe there are some tidbits there that may help somewhere. It includes ProControl setup, ODBC setup, and some of the conversion steps that we used.

Depending on your server and database the 4.0 to 5.0 conversion can take many many hours. Ours took something like 10 or 12 hrs. on a dual PII 450Mhz server with 512MB of RAM. When we converted from 5.0 to 5.1 it took 8 hrs on my PIII 800mhz laptop with 256MB of RAM, but only took 25 minutes on our Dual PIII 1.2GHZ server with 1GB of RAM.

Hope this helps.
