Location used when no Primary Location

We don’t use the fulfillment bench, but I wonder if it uses the same logic as backflush per Epicor’s notes on backflushing:

Backflush
When selected, this check box indicates that this material should be issued when labor is reported against the related operation. This check box is active if you have selected a Related Operation for the material.
Important: This field is only available if this material is selected for Backflush on the part record and a Related Operation is selected. Once you have entered labor transactions against the related operation, you cannot change this entry.
Backflushing only affects the warehouse that is associated with the job; it does not always affect the warehouse of the inventory location. The Backflushing logic uses the following hierarchy to locate the warehouse/bin from which to issue the material:

1. The Resource Group Input warehouse and bin, if present. If not...
2. The Resource Group Backflush warehouse and bin, if present. If not...
3. The Primary Bin in the allocated warehouse, if present. If not...
4. The first primary bin with a positive On-Hand Quantity, if present. If not...
5. The bin in the warehouse.
When the backflushing logic finds a bin from which to issue material, it will only use this bin for the entire transaction. If there is not enough quantity available to satisfy the issued material, quantity will still continue to be subtracted from this bin. This causes a negative quantity to be calculated by the application.
You can also backflush material from a Shared Warehouse.

One additional note, during our testing on backflushing, the bin selection (option 5) is based upon the first alphanumeric bin that the System finds with any inventory . This logic may apply or not but thought I’d share.

This is a complete guess, but I always thought it was the last location you may have used for that part. If you received into bin A then it sets itself to that bin until you set a primary bin.

Version 9.05.702

Does anyone know what location is selected if there is no Primary location assigned to an item when processing orders within the Fulfillment Workbench? We currently have a primary location for every item in stock, but we are moving soon and the WH does not want to be limited to only picking from a primary.

1. Does it select the next location based of alphanumeric order?
2. Can I specify the way it selects the next location by using the Bin Sequence in the Bin setup screen?

Thanks,
Andrew

That is interesting.  Not entirely a bad thing.  I am unable to test this theory currently, cause I am using my TEST environment for another project and don't have the sample data to test.  Would it be difficult for you to test that theory, so we both know for sure.

We are on version 10 and all of our parts are already set to a primary bin.  10 and 9 could yield different results, but I will try and see in our test environment.  I would just try it in your test environment with a brand new part number.
