[ot] citrix & / or 2k3 terminal services

I'm running 2k3 with the Citrix XP Server and have no problems, the
way Vantage is run had to be tweaked a little but besides that I have
no porblems, the benefits are endless, starting from low bandwith
needs (I run 20 citrix users over a 11b wireless and have no delay) to
user helpdesk (the shadow function in CItrix is so much better than
remote control over TS)

I suggest Citrix, if you need to know what has to be changed, just
write me and I'll give you the scoop.

We have recently made the decision to implement terminal server 2k3 in
conjunction with Citrix server. With the postings I have read recently,
it sounds like a lot of you are swaying away from Citrix and simply
implementing 2K3 terminal services. I would like to see if I could get
some kind of consensus as to what the group's recommendation on this
would be.

The main reason I have decided to go with Citrix is because of the lack
of administrative information I get from our current installation of Win
2K terminal services.

Thank you,

We have been using Terminal Services on Windows 2003 Server for over a year and have not had any issues. The program is very stable and allows us to run any application we from this server. The 2003 version is much improved from the 2000 version.

As a very good alternative to Citrix, you might check out www.tarantella.com

$50 per user, gives you great reports, seamless windows, load balancing. It
does almost everything Citrix does.

Bruce, if you're running a 2003 AD domain implementing Server 2003 with
TS is fairly painless. Citrix is simply for presentation in my opinion.
With AD you can use Group Policy Management to customize the appearance
of the desktop your users will see when they logon to the TS. I've had
a 2003 Server w/TS for about 6 months and it's been rock solid. If you
have any questions feel free to contact me off-line.

Dave,

I'm a long time Citrix user but am considering upgrading our Terminal Server in Asia to Windows 2003 running Terminal Services. Aside from the negative in regards to having to purchase TS cals for all OS's what type of improvements have been made from 2000 to 2003?

Two primary reasons I've been a long time Citrix fan is the ability to "Shadow" another Citrix user (we use this often for remote training) and the printer auto creation function (greatly improved with MetaFrame XP). Does the bare Terminal Services in 2003 have similar functionality?

I had also heard that the ICA protocol was less 'chatty' than RDP. Is this still true?

While I like Citrix, it is expensive so would give it up if I can get same or similar functionality with just plain TS..

Thanks,
Mike
