Progress installation

Thanks for the info Troy, Dan, and Nancy. I will eventually make the
changes that the article suggested. But, until then does anyone see a major
problem with me not utilizing the Progress Explorer tool right now? Will it
corrupt or screw up my database in any way?

I upgraded us to 5.0 last Saturday. Well, overall the upgrade went well! I had something very strange happen
though. I have a Win 2000 server that Vantage and Progress are on. Well, when I went to set up Progress Explorer it said that the snap-in did not initialize. Then I went to the console, action button to add the Progress Server and it did not give me any "options" at all to add a Progress Server. So, since I was having trouble adding it, I thought I would continue on and install the eManufacturing client then come back to the Progress Explorer tool and try
and add it later. I installed all the clients and went back to install the Explorer tool. But, I thought just for the heck of it, I'll see if I can log on to eManufacturing anyway. SURPRISE! I was able to log on easily!! So, my eManufacturing is up and running without ProControl or Progress Explorer. Other than a few minor RB issues and slow performance issues, it seems to be running fine!! (We don't use data collection yet)

I called tech support and explained what happened and one support person said that I really don't need Progress Explorer if I feel comfortable shutting down the database with Promonitor and if I don't need to add another database later on. Another support person said that it is imperative that I reinstall Progress so I can use the Progress Explorer tool. So, at this point I'm not sure what I'm going to do. Maybe I'll just wait until 5.1 and install it then.......

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Wendy I too load up 5.0 last weekend. We run SBS 4.5 I had the same problem
with the explorer tool. I rebooted the server at that point and was able to
finish the Progress explorer configuration after that. I loaded it up on
test server and have not been able to work with it much.

By any chance do your servers have Internet Explorer version 5 on them? When
I installed on a test server last week, I came across a note to make sure
you were on version 5 of Internet Explorer, before installing EMfg (thanks
Joe & Dave), so I went to Ver 5.5 sp1 and didn't have any problems with the
Progress Explorer Tool, when I installed eMfg.

Wendy,

We had a simmilar problem, our contact at Vantage walked us through a
registry change that corrected the issue.

We went to 5.0 in December 2000 and at that time they indicated that
Epicor was going to create a tech document regarding this issue.

I believe the tech was Ben Nixon who was very helpful for us. In any
event good luck.

If you search Eranet for this error, you will get a document explaining what
needs to be done to correct this problem. Additionally, there is a "bug"
with the Progress MMC that usually does not keep the progress server in the
MMC. In other words, you have to add it each time you open Progress
Explorer (or reboot the server). Eranet also provides the solution to this
problem. I wish I had the document numbers for you, but I do not have them
with me. Hope this helps.

This happens only on Windows 2000.

Here is the Kbase article # 19887 : (http://eranet.epicor.com/ansbook/vantage/public/9/99/996/996mps.htm)

Page: 996MPS
Summary: Progress Explorer & Win 2000 not retaining Progress Servers
AnswerBook: Vantage ChangeRequests

For 9.1A and eManufacturing 5.0 XA500

Progress Explorer & Win 2000 not retaining Progress Servers
-----------------------------------------------------------

INTRODUCTION
------------

This Knowledge Base was written to resolve an issue with Progress
and Microsoft Management Console 1.2.

PROBLEM EXPLAINED
-----------------

When you use the Progress Explorer with version V9.1A on Windows
2000, there is a problem where the Progress servers created are
not saved when exiting Progress Explorer. The information within
the servers is retained but this is inconvenient to have to Add
the Progress Servers each time you restart the Progress Explorer,
but the server itself is not.

The reason for this is that Windows 2000 uses Microsoft Management
Console version 1.2 and the Progress shipped snap-in "proexp.msc"
is in MMC 1.1 format, which is not fully compatible with Windows
2000 by default.

REPRODUCING THE PROBLEM
-----------------------

1) Run Progress Explorer from Start > Programs > Progress >
Progress Explorer Tool.

2) Right mouse click on Console Root and select Add Progress Server.

3) Add a server (localhost is adequate for a test) and login.
Your localhost server appears on the Console Root list.

4) Exit Progress Explorer.

5) Repeat Step 1 to run Progress Explorer again. Your localhost
server is missing from the Console Root. It should be listed.

RESOLVING THE PROBLEM
---------------------

To resolve this problem you need to open the Progress Explorer
and proexp.msc in Author Mode (/a). This is done by adding the
/a startup option to the target in the properties of Progress
Explorer:

D:\91a\bin\jvmStartw.exe -c @{JAVA\PROGRESSCP};@{JAVA\JRECP}
mmc.exe /s /a "d:\91a\proexp.msc"

When you run Progress Explorer now, and Add your Progress server,
when you exit Progress Explorer you will be prompted for
confirmation to save the console settings to proexp.msc. Clicking
YES, will bring another dialog explaining that the proexp.msc was
saved with an earlier version of MMC, and you will be asked if
you would like to update this file to MMC 1.2. After selecting
YES, you can then remove the /a startup option from the Progress
Explorer command line.

Now when you Add Progress Servers these details will be kept, and
you will not need to add these each time you restart Progress
Explorer.
