Lorne,
One job might have 10 subassemblies, each having 100 hours
engineering time
or more. Our QA procedures require a complete job router be
on the floor
when working on parts. If we have just one engineer on the
job he can
release individual assemblies to the floor as soon as they
are engineered.
Our average job has a quantity of one and runs 6 months to a
year.

Really curious as to the reason (business process) that
requires you to have to generate separate jobs for each of
the subs, where it would lead to this problem.

Hello Jasper,

We use projects extensively but have recently discovered a
problem with
material cost information. We break many of our
assemblies
for a job into
separate jobs, i.e. job A has job B and job C as a
material
requirement. If
jobs A, B and C are in a project the material costs look
OK
until you
transfer material costs from B to A or C to A using
receipts
from
manufacturing. The material cost gets counted twice in
the
project tracker.
We are on 5.20.315. Tech support has duplicated the
problem
on 6.10.

We use Projects extensively over here. Basically its a
way to group all
orders, jobs, and pos together to track costs. I
noticed
the other day

you can set up budgets, but have not played with that

We are using Projects to tie together jobs that are on the same customer
purchase order. We do a lot of engineering development work so we have
jobs set up for initial engineering development, environmental testing,
HALT testing, data, prototypes, etc. These are all tied together into
one project - that way we can see what the total cost is vs the amount
billed. We have just begun to experiment with downloading into MS
Project.

We use projects to track testing as well. Primarily to collect the
required data that is required to qualify R&D/Testing work for the
Federal Tax Credit that is available for R&D Testing time and material.

Does anybody know how I can use the Project module to track just hours worked on specific tasks? Right now we are doing research and development but we are not building anything. It's all design work. How can I track the hours of our engineers without creating a job for them to log into. I want to track their hours based on each task.

Is this possible in version 6.1? How about newer versions?

Projects only capture info on Sales Orders, POs, and Jobs, or any place
where the Project ID is linked to...you would still have to create a job
and link it to the Project to get this info.

Same in 8.0 and 8.03, not sure about 9.

We use projects rather extensively. Projects is not a transaction recording vehicle. Rather it is simply a reporting umbrella under which you can link in various aspects of Vantage functionality (i.e. Sales Orders, Purchase Orders, Service JObs, Production Jobs, etc...) Then within projects, you can create different modules to make summarization of the various data easier. For example we have a customer projects that we break down into modules (Machinery, Installation, Project Management, Design, etc...) All transactions (Material, Labor, Burden) still originate and are recorded on a job. There are no transactions recorded in the Projects module. It is just reporting and summarization. That being said, I scratch my head because there are zero canned system reports on projects. I wonder what Epicor was thinking. The project Tracker is a nice tool and does do nice sumamrization of the project. Realize however, that we have found that to make project tracker work, job structure and job linkage is VERY VERY important and can become a challenge to ensure that the project tracker shows the proper information. (I'll now send you a post relating to the other part of your question regarding R&D tracking)
