Promon Remotely

I found (today) that you don't have to put in the number of the station you
are killing twice, just refresh the screen twice and they disappear. One
more of those mysterious "how come?" things we will never know.

I can do it under my user, but I am a Domain Admin (NT4 Domain). This also
make me a local Admin on the Vantage box.
I would try one of the two approaches. I better be someone you trust.
Good luck,

I know this was discussed once before, but I am not sure that we ever
came up with a working version.

Because I am "IT" I am the only one with direct access to the Vantage
server. This means that I am the only one who can end a user's session
using Promon.

Is there any way to have a link to promon on another computer, so they
too have the ability to kick users?

I don't wish to open up the server for others, just that particular
program.

I'm headed on vacation soon, and I don't want to have to remote into the
server to fix this while I am gone.

Thanks in advance...

Ben,

I use an RDP client to get into the server. 2 free "Admin Only" RDP
licenses come with Server 2K, and, not positive, 2k3.

You might be able to run Promon remotely on your pc, but it will not close a user session. In the log file, you will see the error code: "Error user cannot disconnect user (2258)".

It has to do with user rights of the local system account which AdminServer started the database with. (see progress article P10326)

I went another route and wrote a program to control promon on the server from my pc by sending commands via a TCP/Winsock connection. Works fine and it means I don't have to remote into the server or walk over to it to kill a session.

I run a batch file on the server every 15 seconds to dump the connected
users to a text file using DOS and redirection. On the client side I
created an Access form to parse the output and link to a list of
users/computers to display the information on the form. The user of the
form can select a connected user and hit a button to disconnect them (a
script is created which the server batch file will process and
disconnect the user). I have about 3 users I have given this to so they
can disconnect a user if I am not arround. Like one of the users said,
you sometimes have to disconnect them a couple of times.

Subject: [Vantage] Promon Remotely

I know this was discussed once before, but I am not sure that we ever
came up with a working version.

Because I am "IT" I am the only one with direct access to the Vantage
server. This means that I am the only one who can end a user's session
using Promon.

Is there any way to have a link to promon on another computer, so they
too have the ability to kick users?

I don't wish to open up the server for others, just that particular
program.

I'm headed on vacation soon, and I don't want to have to remote into the
server to fix this while I am gone.

Thanks in advance...

Thanks so much! It works great. Course, I'm always logged on as an
administrator on my workstation, which might be why some others have a
problem with it.

Love these little helpful hints!!

Ben,
I got this from the group a while back.
I found sometimes you have to tell a session to shut down a couple times
before it does, but this is the shortcut:
V:\prgs91d\bin\_mprshut.exe V:\EPICOR\mfgsys61\Db\mfgsys -N TCP -H
yourservername -S 6100
Good luck,

Simply, as much of what I share...it's just a read, absorb what I can and
regurgitate it back when requested. :)

Aha... so I tried logging on as Administrator onto my workstation and
Promon worked as you had said, it takes it two times to kick someone
off.

If I have to be administrator, how can I give my own account rights,
instead of having to log in as administrator?

I want to give someone access to promon, but not the admin password.

Thanks!

Ben

I can do it under my user, but I am a Domain Admin (NT4 Domain). This also
make me a local Admin on the Vantage box.
I would try one of the two approaches. I better be someone you trust.
