Vantage 6.1 on Windows 2003 Terminal Server

Crystal files also go there. We have no problems.

I would be careful with that setting, although it works nice and fast,
it can also mess up your Vantage Crystal reports, since they are
manually set to a TEMP dir location. So if you have any custom reports
you might get errors. EX the packing slip report creates DBF files in
the TEMP dir for printing. So vantage will place them in its default
working dir, but Crystal will be looking in c:\mfgwrk61 or c:\vntgwork
or anywhere else you might have set that reports default dir. Since you
can't make separate prints (reports) for Local VNTG and Terminal VNTG,
you might experience some problems. I suggest doing it my way, just to
be on the safe side.

If you have the following line for the Terminal Server's .mfg file:

tempdirectory=

it'll use the user's local temp directory in their profile, not
disturbing
anyone else's, and the files will be nicely deleted when they log off.

I'm using a Citrix Metaframe Server, and have no problems, but like I
told on more person here, if you want it to work faster and more
smoothly, you should edit your MFG files to match the local drive setup
of the Terminal server (actually not doing this in some cases might
render Vantage useless - especially if you are restricting there rights
to access the local C drive):

[MFG Startup]
Executable=V:\PRGS91D\bin\prowin32.exe
Database=V:\mfgsys60\db\MFGSYS
IniFile=V:\mfgsys60\mfgsys.ini
ParameterFile=V:\mfgsys60\db\mfgsys.pf
ConnectOptions=-N TCP -H privan -S 6000 -ld MFGSYS
TempDirectory=m:\vntgwork
StartupProcedure=mainmenu.w
OtherParameters=-rand 2 -q -basekey ini
mfgsys=VN
mfglanguage=enu
mfgtranslator=yes
;MFGODBCpasswd=sysprogress
;MFGODBCUser=sysprogress
;MFGODBCDbse=mfgsys
;MFGODBCServer=Progress91D
[WFClient]

What I mean is set your temp dir to be local to the terminal server.
Also I suggest adding this to you login script or setting it in the
schedule to run at a time that no one is working and logged into the
server (at least the part about the M drives)

copy \\pripdc\netlogon\ifmember.exe c:\winnt
DEL c:\vntgwork\*.* /f /q
DEL m:\vntgwork\*.* /f /q
DEL m:\vntgwork1\*.* /f /q

Since I have 30 users that log on from work and home, I have two temp
dir's and divide the mfg files evenly, so they don't have conflicts
trying to create the same temp file at the same time. Also if you are
running AD, make sure you give the user local modification rights to his
TEMP dir and give everyone rights to delete files from the Terminal
Server directories.

4 GB Ram will handle 100 users. Recommend checking out Enterprise
Server. Standard doesn't effectively us above 2GB of Ram even with the
reg hack. It reserves close to 2 Gb for the OS on standard version. I
put 4GB of ram on my Vantage server and the max db I can load into
memory is 1.3 GB.

I would think this would be the recommended way to go to V8. 80% of my
client computers are over 1 Ghz but only the machines in Engineering
have 1 GB of Ram. I've got 120 client computers. The hardware upgrade
for just the clients will keep us from upgrading to V8. I'm waiting to
see how many other people view this as the way to go to V8.

We are also thinking about using TS with our upgrade to 6.1 on a new

How much is the license cost for client side TS? How much server
memory is required.

What do you want to know? We have 2000, 2003 with and without Citrix
in use with terminal services. There are a number of good and bad
things with each. First is your 2003 terminal licensing might cost
you. In 2000 hosts running 2000 or XP pro did not need a license.
With 2003 they will need a license. It appears at first they are
working, but the have only been issued a temporary license which
expires after 90 days. With out citrix you can have to do a lot of
policy and connection setting so the end user doesn't realize they have
a whole different desktop they are working on.

If you have specific questions I'll be happy to answer them.

I used to use citrix and you have to use terminal server regardless it
just that citrix has a "nice presentation". However, I've abandon
citrix and use only terminal server with server 2003 as in my opinion it
is a superior product. Yes, it is true you must "customize" the
desktop, but this can be accomplished by using Group Policy Management,
but I found it very easy to "lock down" the desktop using this tool. My
experience has been nothing but positive with Windows Server 2003 TS.
The instructions provided by Epicor actually aren't too bad and setting
up your terminal server should be somewhat painless. I am upgrading to
6.1 from 6.0 this weekend. I'd be happy to answer any other questions
you have with regards to this matter.

Peter

I agree with Mark. I just upgraded my servers from NT 4 to Win2k3.
In the process I dumped Citrix for Windows Terminal Services. Yes it
takes a little locking down. Make a TS users OU and then restrict it as
you like. I also put the shortcut to Vantage in the All Users startup so
it automatically comes up when they log in. All I've gotten is praise on
how much faster it is, Course I went from a 600Mhz server to a 3 Ghz
server. As Mark said the Epicor instructions are close enough to make it
work.

We have 50 users, 4GB ram and I now we could handle at least 3 times that.
$75 per client

[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Executable=V:\PRGS91D\bin\prowin32.exe
Database=V:\mfgsys60\db\MFGSYS
IniFile=V:\mfgsys60\mfgsys.ini
ParameterFile=V:\mfgsys60\db\mfgsys.pf
ConnectOptions=-N TCP -H privan -S 6000 -ld MFGSYS
TempDirectory=m:\vntgwork
StartupProcedure=mainmenu.w
OtherParameters=-rand 2 -q -basekey ini
mfgsys=VN
mfglanguage=enu
mfgtranslator=yes
;MFGODBCpasswd=sysprogress
;MFGODBCUser=sysprogress
;MFGODBCDbse=mfgsys
;MFGODBCServer=Progress91D

If you have the following line for the Terminal Server's .mfg file:

tempdirectory=

it'll use the user's local temp directory in their profile, not disturbing
anyone else's, and the files will be nicely deleted when they log off.

dir's and divide the mfg files evenly, so they don't have conflicts
trying to create the same temp file at the same time.

OMG,
I have so tried to figure that out for 4 years.

You win the prize today.... when I figure out what the prize is... I will
let you know.

Thanks
This is great.

Wooohoo..

Executable=V:\PRGS91D\bin\prowin32.exe
Database=V:\mfgsys60\db\MFGSYS
IniFile=V:\mfgsys60\mfgsys.ini
ParameterFile=V:\mfgsys60\db\mfgsys.pf
ConnectOptions=-N TCP -H privan -S 6000 -ld MFGSYS
TempDirectory=m:\vntgwork
StartupProcedure=mainmenu.w
OtherParameters=-rand 2 -q -basekey ini
mfgsys=VN
mfglanguage=enu
mfgtranslator=yes
;MFGODBCpasswd=sysprogress
;MFGODBCUser=sysprogress
;MFGODBCDbse=mfgsys
;MFGODBCServer=Progress91D
