Vantage freezing up randomly

I only wish I could have that many printers that worked without a problem.
We went from 5.1 to 6.0 and have daily crashes related to printing. The
server has a new install of Vantage and the worst workstation I have has a
new install as well. It crashes several times a day or just loses the print
job.

Matching .dll's between the server, the Crystal development PC and the
workstation has helped. It didn't solve the problem. Support certainly
knows of the issue, they don't like to talk about it and they tend to play
down how often it occurs. The last I heard from support that there was a
three way finger pointing match going on with Epicor, Microsoft and Crystal.

I would replace my printers and load a new version of the OS if somebody
could just guarantee that "this" configuration works.

Cliff, I'll check the register and see if anything old got left during
testing. I thought we reformatted and started over, but that was over a
year ago. Thanks for something new to check. I have tried everything else
the group and support has suggested.

Nothing solves the problem.

When we first went from 4.0 to 6.0 we had problems with positions that
printed a lot hanging and getting kicked out while printing. I did full
regedits searching on "progress" and removing entries not referencing
MicroSoft. Old versions of Vantage leave lots of garbage in the registry.
This cured the problem for us. I have seventeen network printers (all HP's)
on one print server with no problems, not on the Vantage server.

agravated by it and I hate that I can't fix it!

We are on 6.1 and having the same problem, generally while printing
from Vantage, a Sales Order or Job Traveler most frequently. I've
been working with support for several weeks on this and they seem
pretty baffled. I think this problem is fairly widespread and
becoming more common as people are upgrading OS's and Vantage. No
solution so far for us, although support has said they've been able
to help some customers.

Everyone who is having this problem should report it to support so
they can get the clearest possible picture of how big the problem
is. Right now I don't think they are taking the problem as seriously
as they could. The way things are going I've kind of resigned myself
to hoping that the problem won't occur in V8 and we'll just have to
live with it until then. I'll let you know if I get any answers.

Seems to be a pretty popular argument with everyone? Ever since I
upgraded from 5.2 to 6.0 we have it happen to us on a regular bases. I
have talked with support also and no results from it. So I am also up
for any suggestions.

I have it occurring almost daily on 1 workstation and most often while she
is printing a Vantage form. Her station is XP Pro with 512mg ram. I
thought it must be something unique to my network connection for her and
have not had time to work on it. She is a power user on Vantage all day,
but I have others that do not have the problem. Since this seems to be more
common than I thought, if any one finds a solution, please post it.

We've had the same problem when printing since upgrading from 5.00 to 6.10
in november. This morning I found out that the printer selection screen goes
behind the Vantage screens. This locks up the Vantage screen. Using the
ALT-TAB key we are able to switch to this screen and unlock Vantage.

I hope that this will help a few of you guys.

Since the general symptom seems to be during print, are your Vantage servers
also acting as Print Servers. If so maybe moving the print server to a
different machine will show something. I have 3 sets of two printers. 2 HP
5 SI, 2 Zebra 4m, and 2 Panasonic 6010's. As long as each model printer is
on its own Print Server machine things are fine. If I print serve all three
types on the same machine all hell breaks loose.

When on 5.1 and our old server it would happen quite a bit. Usually during
printing.
Replacing our server with new hardware and taking the time to optimize our
network configuration got rid of the problem.
New hardware was acquired because of "best guess requirements" of future
versions of Vantage.
Don't laugh - but still running NT 4.0 - But it's paid for. Won't change
until I have too. Now running 6.1 and looking forward to 8 like a root
canal.

I found that printing directly from the workstation to the print server (in
our case built into the HP Laserjet) was the most likely cause. I setup a
print queue on our NT File & Print server and mapped all work station
printing through that. The queue seems to be able to handle the randomness
of multiple print jobs from multiple sources far better than the Laserjet's
jetdirect print server can.

Yes, us too - especially on printing anything related to Crystal. I have been chasing .DLLs for weeks with some small amount of success...and then it starts happening again. It is always related to printing to an HP LaserJet printer that is NOT local to the PC running the report. In one case I have had the users print only to a Ricoh Aficio copier/printer and they do not freeze up when printing. I am positive I have resolved this sort of issue in the past with a combo of DLLs, registry hack and HP driver changes. Crystal is notorious for limited driver scope in their qualifying of the software. On my project list is a task to do a detailed search of old group messages and assemble a systematic plan of attack to determine what actually does the trick.

Sarah....on the new server issue, if it is not related to this other freeze up with printing, I know there was discussion a few years ago about network settings in Windows on the server togreatly increase some sort of inactivity timeout. Can't be set to zero but it can be set very high so as to vistually never timeout. Not sure what server version this was in. Perhaps this rings a bell for someone else who knows the registry setting this applies to.

We are on 6.1 and having the same problem, generally while printing
from Vantage, a Sales Order or Job Traveler most frequently. I've
been working with support for several weeks on this and they seem
pretty baffled. I think this problem is fairly widespread and
becoming more common as people are upgrading OS's and Vantage. No
solution so far for us, although support has said they've been able
to help some customers.

Everyone who is having this problem should report it to support so
they can get the clearest possible picture of how big the problem
is. Right now I don't think they are taking the problem as seriously
as they could. The way things are going I've kind of resigned myself
to hoping that the problem won't occur in V8 and we'll just have to
live with it until then. I'll let you know if I get any answers.

I think this is a separate issue. I have seen this happen at times as
well, and as you say ALT-TAB will bring the screen back up front. When
this happens, usually a button has been accidentally pressed which
brings a different screen to the foreground, pushing that print screen
box to the foreground.
This issue is more of a print command all ready being executed, the
screen *is* gone, you get the hourglass and it just stays there until
eventually you get kicked out.

We've had the same problem when printing since upgrading from 5.00 to
6.10
in november. This morning I found out that the printer selection screen
goes
behind the Vantage screens. This locks up the Vantage screen. Using the
ALT-TAB key we are able to switch to this screen and unlock Vantage.

Yes, we have a problem just like yours.
I spent a lot of time with tech support to try and figure it out.
It turned out that there is a bug in Vantage 6.1 which runs on Progress
9.1D.
Our problems happen when working with jobs that have to be closed.
You might speak with Craig Kumpula.

Thanks for all the quick replies! I am sorry to hear so many people are
having these types of freezing up issues. Our problem seems to be a little
different than most of the problems reports here, b/c ours does not happen
while printing (or at least not predominately while printing). We have had
an occasional freeze-up during printing, but we get them more often at other
completely random times like closing jobs, shipping jobs, adjusting labor or
just calling up a job. No rhyme or reason that we can find.

Shot in the dark....create a small batch file to empty the working directory (mfgwrk61 for isntance) and have users run it frequently then see if the problem stops or happens a lot less often. I have had some user issues resolved by keeping the working folder as empty as possible.

Thanks, Todd. I did try searching the archives before posting here and I
went back about a year searching on 'freeze' and 'freezing' but I will try
to go back even further and see if I can find the old threads regarding that
setting. It is so sad b/c our old server was SO SLOW a real dog, but we
never had this problem. Now, we buy a brand new server that screams - it's
so fast - but it kicks us out all the time!

Yes, us too - especially on printing anything related to Crystal. I have
been chasing .DLLs for weeks with some small amount of success...and then it
starts happening again. It is always related to printing to an HP LaserJet
printer that is NOT local to the PC running the report. In one case I have
had the users print only to a Ricoh Aficio copier/printer and they do not
freeze up when printing. I am positive I have resolved this sort of issue
in the past with a combo of DLLs, registry hack and HP driver changes.
Crystal is notorious for limited driver scope in their qualifying of the
software. On my project list is a task to do a detailed search of old group
messages and assemble a systematic plan of attack to determine what actually
does the trick.

Sarah....on the new server issue, if it is not related to this other freeze
up with printing, I know there was discussion a few years ago about network
settings in Windows on the server togreatly increase some sort of inactivity
timeout. Can't be set to zero but it can be set very high so as to
vistually never timeout. Not sure what server version this was in. Perhaps
this rings a bell for someone else who knows the registry setting this
applies to.

We are on 6.1 and having the same problem, generally while printing
from Vantage, a Sales Order or Job Traveler most frequently. I've
been working with support for several weeks on this and they seem
pretty baffled. I think this problem is fairly widespread and
becoming more common as people are upgrading OS's and Vantage. No
solution so far for us, although support has said they've been able
to help some customers.

Everyone who is having this problem should report it to support so
they can get the clearest possible picture of how big the problem
is. Right now I don't think they are taking the problem as seriously
as they could. The way things are going I've kind of resigned myself
to hoping that the problem won't occur in V8 and we'll just have to
live with it until then. I'll let you know if I get any answers.

Out of curiosity, how many of us that are having this freezing/booted
out issue, can directly relate it to crystal reports?
Everytime I get booted, it is when trying to print a crystal report. I
never get booted when printing a progress report....
