While I don't claim to be an expert on thin client networking I have almost
the identical setup and can give you my opinions.
Our main location in Baltimore is running an NT 4.0 Terminal Server with
Citrix installed with a T-1 connection. We have a smaller shop in Tampa
Florida, which is running a 2000 Terminal server on a cable modem
connection. Our Baltimore Citrix server is for our Florida users and a few
home users to connect to Vantage and any other local access databases we run
here and vice versa for Florida. Both servers allow printing to both
printers located on the network they are physically hooked to and the one
they are "dialed" into. You need to have the print drivers pre-installed
for both servers. I have installed a generic DeskJet and LaserJet printer
to allow for wide compatibility and in special cases (11 x 17 printing) I
installed the actual drivers for those specific printers. Both servers work
great and response time while not as responsive as the local LAN are very
acceptable even with large print jobs. The biggest drawback I have with the
2000 server is how it handles licensing. You mentioned that all your
connecting clients are 2000 Pro machines and if this is the case you are
fine because 2000 Pro systems come with a 2000 TS license included. If you
have any NT, 95, or 98 clients, like I do you will watch the licenses like a
hawk. I bought 10 licenses. One a computer makes a connection that license
is permanently assigned to that machine and cannot be released. You would
be surprised how fast job responsibilities around here change and someone
else needs that ability. I either assign another license from the pool or
switch their PCs. I opt to buy more licenses (at $75.00 a pop). The Citrix
server in contrast while it costs more to initially purchase, once you buy
the licenses it is for a number of concurrent users and when you disconnect
the license is freed up. NT 4.0 TS is the same but it doesn't support the
remote/local printing that we needed.
I hope this helps some. Please feel free to call me with questions if I can
help. Took a while to get the bugs out but now it works great.

Subject: [Vantage] Win2000 server and terminal services vs Citrix
Hello all,
I am getting conflicting information regarding W2K server w/ TS vs using
Citrix Metaframe. I could really use some advice/opinions/facts in several
area. First, let me give some background on my situation.
I currently manage a 41 user Vantage 3.0.. in Cincinnati, Ohio. We have a
much smaller sister company locate in Charlotte, NC which is in need of
Acct/mfg software (4-5 users). One of the proposed solutions is to add a
Win2000 server box at my location (ideas on the config for this are welcome
also) with terminal services and remote access from Charlotte. I can now
get a 1.5m SDSL connection for around $550/month, the Charlotte location
already has a 768k T1. The Charlotte location will be running all Win2000
Pro connected to a W2K server. I currently run a NT 4.0 box for Vantage.
My questions:
1) Does Win2000 TS support remote printing, or from a user's perpective,
local printing? I have been told both Yes and No. What's right? It has
been suggested that I will need Citrix to do this and would add about
$5,000. to the cost. Anyone care to discuss?
2) Given the communications parameters (1.5m SDSL on my end, 768k T1 on the
remote) what kind of response times would be typical? How much latency can I
expect. For those will experience, is it likely that the folks in Charlotte
would be satisfied with this setup. I don't expect to get the same speed as
a local user, but what would be reasonable to expect?
I am in need of answer to these issues ASAP. Please repond to me directly or
better yet a call would be great.
Thanks in advanced.
