Migrating to a new server

Hi All,

We are looking to move our instance of Epicor 9.05.701 and DB to a new server (2012 R2)

What should we know/find out ahead of time to try and make things as smooth as possible

Any other tips / hints would also be greatly appreciated

Thank you

Putting on my Support hat:

  1. Windows 2012R2 server is not supported with Epicor 9.05 (on the server that runs OpenEdge). Windows 2008/2008R2 are the supported server OSs.
  2. If your database is SQL and you install OE 10.2a on 2012R2, then it simply will not work. Many have tried (myself included), but to my knowledge, all were unsuccessful.
  3. It is possible to get OpenEdge databases working on Windows 2012R2 with OpenEdge 10.2a, but, I refer back to my first point.

What is the driving factor to move to a new server? If it is to make use of better/faster hardware, then I would recommend downgrading the OS to one that is supported/certified by the business critical software package or upgrade the version of the business critical software package to one that is supported/certified on the server OS (any of our Epicor 10.x releases are with Windows 2012R2).

Taking off my Support hat:
I’m not personally aware of an OpenEdge database customer running into any unique Epicor 9.05 on Windows 2012R2 issues. Not to say they don’t exist, but, no one has reported them through Support.

The main driving factor is yes, to move it onto a newer server that has all the hardware support bells and whistles but it is also to separate out some of the other services that the server runs… at some point other bits have been added. E10 was something we were looking at but when we were allowed to try testing it it gave us errors for major points, which meant that until that was fixed we’d realistically be sticking with 9.05.701

So far Epicor have been very slow with any help we’ve asked of them with anything to do with this.

If you could, please send me an email at naanderson AT epicor DOT com with a summary of the issues you are looking for more assistance from any team within Epicor and I’d be happy to assist getting the correct resources engaged to help you with the outstanding issues you are experiencing.

One thing to mention, even if going to the same OS on the new server, is the server name change, and how it could affect any references that use the server’s name (customizations, configurators, lookup files, reports, etc… )

couple years ago, we built a second server from the prod server. EPI02 (New) and EPI01 (Prod). Everything was built up on EPI02, then we took down the servers over the weekend and we renamed each server.

EPI01 to EPI03
EPI02 to EPI01

We then had a consultant (EPICOR) and change all the necessary files on the new server. Everything turned out great.
